Castle (2007) is an unlicensed theme introduced in 2007. Th theme is oftentimes referred to "Fantasy Era" or "Fantasy Castle" by fans who distinguish it from the original Castle theme introduced in 1978. The theme is the successor to Knights Kingdom and ran until 2009, and replaced with Kingdoms due to the fact that there has been complaints that this theme focuses more on a "fantasy land" rather than close-to-real happenings during the 15th century. The theme focuses on classic fantasy creatures such as trolls or dwarves unlike the earlier Castle themes, which means that it doesn't focus on wars between different medieval kingdoms, but between humans and fantasy creatures like skeletons, dark wizards, and trolls. Most sets contained warriors from two opposing factions and not just one single group, in order to increase playability. The first antagonists of the human faction, represented by the Crown knights, were the Skeleton warriors, led by the Evil Wizard, that appeared in the first year of the theme from the start. In 2008 new foes arose, who were in fact trolls, which were apparently also enemies of the newly added dwarves. In 2009 only four new sets were released, including 10193 Medieval Market Village which is known to be the most intricate work of European styled buildings ever released by LEGO as an official product.

Factions

Crown knights:

10193 Medieval Market Village is one of the most realistic medieval themed sets ever released.

The Crown knightss are the faction that represents the humans and were introduced in 2007. They are "led" by a king and their coat of arms is a crown on a blue background as seen on their shields, flags and uniforms. The faction is in possession of a large castle, 7094 King's Castle Siege. Other buildings include a tower, 7037 Tower Raid, a fortified port, 7029 Skeleton Ship Attack, though despite having a seaside fortress they did not have a navy, and another fortified tower, 7079 Drawbridge Defense. The Crown knights don't have any other vehicles than a chariot, 7078 King's Battle Chariot, but do, however, have two siege engines, the 7091 Knights' Catapult Defense and the 7090 Crossbow Attack. The Crown knights not only use horses as mounts, but dragons as well, as seen in 7048 Troll Warship. This faction features a complete royal family with a king, a queen and a princess. The court also encompasses a wizard and a jester as well as a general.

Skeleton warriors: The skeleton warriorss were the first adversaries of the Crown knights and appeared in 2007 as well. They were basically living skeletons that occasionally also use horse skeletons as mounts. Their leaders are the evil wizrd and his servant. Their symbol is a skull which is featured on their round bucklers and oval shields. The only building of this faction is the skeleton tower, Skeleton Tower, which is also the evil wizard's lair. They also own a sailing ship, 7029 Skeleton Ship Attack and a carriage but not any siege engines.

Troll warriors:

The 7041 Troll Battle Wheel is one of the many ingenious siege engines of the trolls.

The trolls are were ferocious monsters that were introduced in 2008. They have a huge and varied complement of siege engines at their disposal, as well as a large ship, 7048 Troll Warship. But they are only in possession of a single building, 7097 Trolls' Mountain Fortress. There are two versions of trolls, which are the average sized ones known as troll warriors, and larger ones known as giant trolls. Their symbol is an elongated skull which is also featured on flags and their rectangular shields.

Dwarves: The Dwarves are a race of miners and are constantly attacked by the trolls, and were introduced in 2008 as well. Their symbol is a winged helmet, which seems to be their version of a crown, on a blue background and is featured on their round shields. Only two sets have been released so far, including a large mine, 7036 Dwarves' Mine and a battle machine, 7040 Dwarves Mine Defender. In all of these sets the dwarves are pitted against the trolls. A lonely dwarf is also included as a prisoner in the set, 7048 Troll Warship. The dwarves' crest is similar to the one of the Crown knights but includes their own version of a crown, a winged helmet, on blue background. The symbol is featured on round shields. Their weapons are battle axes that consist of two axe blades from Vikings attached to a brown stick. They also use regular axes made by the same method but using only one axeblade. Dwarves use large warhammers as well.

The skeleton tower illustrates that Castle is indeed a fantasy theme.
