2010 - Present

Minifigures, commonly referred to as Collectable Minifigures, is a series of sets beginning in 2010. There are sixteen Minifigures per series, in polybags that cannot be seen through. Every three to four months a new batch is planned to be released. All of the Minifigures have new torsos and faces, and or accessories and hairpieces. It is not uncommon for duplicate parts to be included. The Minifigures are not available in any other sets.

Details

The Collectable Minifigures were introduced in May 2010. The first indicative information regarding this development was in the April LEGO Magazine, with a poster of the Minifigures. The figures are based on movies, sports, history, and essentially everyday life. They were designed to be collected and traded, created so that Minifigures could be acquired without purchasing a whole set.

Each Minifigure features more detail than most "normal" figures, with special, often purpose-made, accessories and a black display base. The figures feature new pieces like maracas, microphones, boomboxes, magic wands, guitars, and several other exclusive pieces.

Every figure comes in an opaque polybag, meaning that buyers can not see what is inside. However, the barcodes on the back of the Polybags of Series 1 and 2 can be used to identify the respective Minifigure; Series 3 and 4 use a "bump code" at the underside of a package. The bump codes are hard to see and feel. You need a light to see them. On some packs numbers cover some the bumps. The figures are available for a limited time; the next batch is then released.

Notes

  • Series 3 and 4 will not have any barcodes, but instead will have a bump code on the bottom strip of the package similar to Braille; 8805 Minifigures Series 5 is still unknown on what system of identification it will use.
  • The plastic used for Collectable Minifigures is different than the plastic used in other sets. It is, instead of ABS plastic, a cheaper plastic from China. Because it is a cheaper plastic, the parts sometimes are difficult to separate or move, such as the hands and the head.
