Ninja

Ninjago is a LEGO theme introduced in January 2011. It uses elements from the previous Ninja series, but there are several noticeable changes from the previous series. These include the the introduction of the Skeleton Army. The theme also includes vehicles which imply a more modern time setting than the Feudal Japan setting from the previous incarnation. One of the Ninjago's themes most unique elements is the battle game known as "Spinjitzu."

Story

Long ago, the first master of Spinjitzu created the world of Ninjago. The master formed the world using the four mystical weapons of Ninjago: the Nunchucks of Lightning, the Shurikens of Ice, the Scythe of Quakes, and the Sword of Fire. The master then entrusted the world he had made and the four mystical weapons with his two sons, Sensei Wu and Lord Garmadon. His sons promised to protect the secrets of the weapons. However, Lord Garmadon was consumed by darkness and greed and wanted to take the power of the weapons for himself. After a great battle with his brother, he was banished to the Underworld.

In defeat, his evil only grew stronger. He became the ruler of the Underworld, and forged alliances with the skeletal Skullkin tribe that lived there. He plans to try once again to take the four weapons of Spinjitzu. In preparation, Sensei Wu has gathered four young ninjas, Kai, Jay, Cole, and Zane, to learn the ways of Spinjitzu. Only they can stop Lord Garmadon.

Spinjitzu

The fighting style practiced by the characters of Ninjago is called Spinjitzu. This word was probably made because of Jujutsu and Ninjutsu, two types of fighting styles used by actual ninjas. The fighters spin around and draw on their elemental strengths to become tornadoes of energy and steel. Several sets in the game include special spinner parts, customized for different characters. Players select their characters, the weapons the character will hold, and a small deck of ability cards to influence the duel. The characters are placed into the spinners and spun at each other like tops, with the goal being to knock the opponent's minifigure down.

The Four Golden Weapons

The Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu are the secrets of victory over Lord Garmadon and his army of skeletons. There are four of them. The ninjas and skeletons are always on the search for these weapons.

  • The Scythe of Quakes is a weapon that is new to LEGO. It has a golden staff, tooth, and a new piece that is like a lightsaber hilt but one side has a connector facing horizontally.
  • The Shurikens of Ice are also new and are really two Weapons, but are used together. They are sometimes used with a staff.
  • The Sword of Fire is a golden katana. A newer version of it will be released in several summer sets.
  • The Nunchucks of Lightning is made of a new short chain and two of the new hilt-like pieces used to make the Scythe of Quakes.

DX Ninja

DX is a special type of Ninjago ninja minifigure. These ninjas wear dragon clothing. The dragons on their suits are all breathing different kinds of elements (Cole, dragon breathing rock; Zane, dragon breathing ice; Jay, dragon breathing lightning; Kai, dragon breathing fire). The ninjas in their DX attire also have gold and red spinners except for Jay who has a gold and grey spinner. Ninja's become DX ones when they have enough experience. Thus meaning it shows ranking among the ninja's. Strangely, both Cole DX and Zane DX are sold in a Spinner Battle Pack, no dragon included. The abbreviation DX is in referance to Dragon Xtreame

Notes

  • "Ninjago" is pronounced "Nin-JA-go".
  • Unlike the larger sets in the line, the minifigures and weapons in the Spinner sets are made from a cheaper Chinese plastic, rather than the usual ABS.
  • An entire area is dedicated to Ninjago on Crux Prime in LEGO Universe. It includes a Maelstrom Mine with skeletons called Skullkins (and occasionally, Nuckal) and the ruins of the Ninjago Dojo, which in the game are explained to have been transported there after a brutal attack, supposedly after the main story of Ninjago.
  • The list of notable guests to Garmadon's Dark Fortress includes Bob the Ummm Barbarian.
  • According to the poster (bottom), the theme is expected to continue a second year into 2012.
