Details
The theme is set underground (like Rock Raiders theme). The basic story is that the Power Miners battle rock monsters and try to take energy crystals with their mining vehicles. The Power Miners are dressed in blue clothing and their vehicles are green.
The first wave of the Power Miners line was released in December 2008/January 2009. The storyline and more information about the miners and the monster have recently been revealed by the LEGO Club.
All of the sets include at least one of the Power Miners and one of their vehicles, as well as one or more rock monsters, except 8962 Crystal King, which only contains the Crystal King himself and two of the miners.
A Power Miners game called "Rock Rocket" was released on November 28th, 2008. There will also be something called the "Super Power Crystal" where the rock monsters eat the crystals.
Power Miners was the first theme that included lime-green LEGO elements. Other new pieces are the spiked wheels and the dynamite sticks.
The theme reprised several elements that were already present in the Rock Raiders theme ten years earlier, such as the occurrence of rock monsters and energy crystals. But unlike in its predecessor, the Rock Monsters played a bigger role and were included in every set. They were also all named characters. But Power Miners also implemented several features that only appeared in the planning stage of Rock Raiders, such as the concept of a mobile base and a common uniform for the miner minifigures. The Power Miners teaser trailer was recentley released by lego club on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYZMpFCLncU
Factions
Power Miners
2009
The eponymous Power Miners are a group of mining specialists who have a large variety of mining vehicles and equipment at their disposal, such as piloted bipedal robots and track vehicles. Most of the vehicles are equipped with drills and include elaborate gear mechanisms. The Power Miners have a large base (8709 Underground Mining Station) and also a mobile drilling rig (8964 Titanium Command Rig).
The four main characters are Doc, the leader of the team, Rex, the engineer, Duke, the veteran, and Brains, the top scientist.
In order to investigate the cause of mysterious rumblings on the surface, the Power Miners were sent underground by the government, where they encountered the Rock Monsters and enigmatic energy crystals.
2010
In 2010, a new group of miners will be introduced. Their clothers and 'armor' will be silver. They will be equipped with mining vehicles with water on them to fight the Lava Monsters. One of there lower bases is a Jail (8191 Monster Jail) for the Lava Monsters.
Rock Monsters
Rock Monsters are the antagonists of the Power Miners and are included in every set. There are five different kinds of Rock Monsters (red, green, blue, yellow and orange). The first wave of sets contained only small versions of the monsters: Boulderaxes are strong, slow, and dumb, Firoxes are sneaky and love to mess with the Power Miners' vehicles, Glaciators are mean and very ill-tempered, Sulfurixes can melt throught solid rock to make their own tunnels, and Meltroxes are very temperamental and destructive. The second wave introduced the Crystal King and two larger (grown up) versions of the smaller ones (Tremorox and Geolix), who can both throw the smaller monsters.
Rather than being a serious threat, the Rock Monsters are portrayed as childish hoodlums in the videos on the LEGO website.
The Rock Monsters don't have any vehicles. Their only equipment are small catapults included in 8961 Crystal Sweeper and 8908 Monster Launcher.
The profile for Doc on the Power Miners website mentions a "portal", suggesting that the rock monsters are from another planet.
In 2010, new type of monster will be introduced - the Lava Monster. They live deeper underground that the Rock Monsters. They have to be fought with water instead of fire.
