From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

Hey, I do have a personal GitHub account, so I've used the site before. I just created one for non-real life stuff like this. My name is "Drewlzoo" (since some other genius must have already taken Drew1200). Drew1200 (talk)

Main Page

  • Hey Meiko, I just saw your message you left me two weeks ago on your test wiki- sorry, I completely ignored that message wall button when I was on Wikia so I didn't see it. I only came across the message because I thought I'd see how CJC's blog was going and came across this comment (for them to find you talking to me on my test wiki- they weren't stalking you much were they?). Anyway, just letting you know I've had the main page ready to go since August on the admin wiki (I think the holdup for you getting access to the wiki is that NXT and Jag are the only 'crats on there and I'm not sure if NXT's checking there much (and Jag's gone I think)). Good idea about having FR and FC sections, I'll add them to the page as soon as I can- I've got a few things going on right now but I should be able to get it added within a day or two. NovaFlare (talk) 19:58, 14 September 2013 (EDT)
    • Sections added (and what's up with the captcha required just to make an edit?) NovaFlare (talk) 20:37, 14 September 2013 (EDT)
      • Saw it on the admin wiki yesterday. :) It's great to be on there; it was always difficult since I'm just about the only sysadmin for Brickimedia who wasn't a Brickipedia admin (other than Lcawte, even though he should have been admin by now). When we get en.brickimedia.org live, I really think it should be more than just what Brickipedia was before. I think we should start to publicise our reviews more, and have a bigger presence in the MOCing community for people to use Customs more. Having good frontage on the main page should be a nice start. As for the captcha, I'm pretty sure it's just because you don't have enough edits yet, where I believe that it will go away when you become flagged as an autoconfirmed user. You can check if you are or not on Special:Preferences where it lists user groups. Feel free to make some random pages and make a few edits (try 10), it should probably work. The problem may also be the effect of a trigger since you're adding an external link. Just play around with some editing and see if it goes away over time. If not, you can flag it as an issue on our GitHub. :) --ToaMeiko (talk) 15:56, 16 September 2013 (EDT)
        • I agree, if we're just going to keep going to keep everything the same as the old wiki, we're not achieving much (we'd still be achieving a bit though of course). Reviews definitely need to be made more user-friendly to write, which should be possible when the people running the site actually want to help the site- I think the main reason why I got stuck on a reviews template before is because I needed an SMW extension to make things work and it wasn't an extension we could have.
Also, I think instead of using Special:Wikiforum, we should have a central forum site (eg, forums.brickimedia.org), one which isn't MediaWiki based, but uses something like IP.board (the software used for sites like Eurobricks). While the wikiforum was good, there are problems with it (problems we'd have to spend time fixing), and the IP.board forums just look much better to me. I've been looking into it and there's an extension here that seems to allow for auto-login between IP.board and Mediawiki, not sure if it'd work for multiple Mediawiki sites though. Having one central forum site might also help to bring the separate communities together a bit more.
Also I've made a possible design for a Meta main page in a similar style to Bricki's main page (see the admin wiki), let me know what you think NovaFlare (talk) 00:10, 17 September 2013 (EDT)
  • Yeah, I'm familiar with IP.Board. It's pricey though, so I'm not sure we could use it just yet. It wouldn't be too hard to have the same user databases across wiki and forums either. We should discuss that more in detail on a Discussion page once meta is up (as in live and out of beta). --ToaMeiko (talk) 14:55, 17 September 2013 (EDT)
    • Oh, I just stupidly assumed that all that type of software was free, I wouldn't bother then, unless we start making loads of money off the site :) NovaFlare (talk) 22:19, 17 September 2013 (EDT)
      • I'm sure there are many free forum softwares (or at least, I assume there used to be as I was signed up to a lot a few years back). Not sure how they'd work with mediawiki though, as most probably only give free if you use their domain name. CJC95 (talk) 18:10, 18 September 2013 (EDT)
        • phpBB is open-source (so we can edit it to make it look Brickimedia-like), free, and decently popular: https://www.phpbb.com/ . If you wanted to splash some cash, this is expensive but very good, used by a lot of people: https://xenforo.com/ . -- SirComputer (talk)
          • Meh, if we do get something, I'd want IP.Board. If we get enough income from now until 2014, we may have enough money to buy IP.Board sometime in the next year. Until then, I think we could just use an integrated forum extension for MediaWiki. Definitely something we should look into; maybe we can take a vote in 2014 about it. --ToaMeiko (talk) 18:11, 19 September 2013 (EDT)

Admin wiki

Hmm... do we have a new admin wiki? Captain Jag (talk) 17:18, 20 September 2013 (EDT)

Comments

  • Hey Meiko, I was just wondering if you knew whether comments were going to be set up by the time the beta test for customs begins (<comments/> currently produces an SQL error because the table hasn't been set up). Also would you mind applying admin to my account on customs? Thanks, NovaHawk 22:44, 23 September 2013 (EDT)
    • I'll work on the thing with Comments, and I'll get you rights on Customs very shortly. --ToaMeiko (talk) 23:01, 23 September 2013 (EDT)
      • Thanks, all seems to be working well :) NovaHawk 23:56, 23 September 2013 (EDT)

Movie Files

Hey Meiko. Can you notify me once it's possible that I could upload a couple of small movie files with my brickfilms? Thanks. BrickfilmNut (talk) 20:06, 24 September 2013 (EDT)

LMBW

I'll mess around with it in my personal CSS sometime. :)

Lia's still working on here for me, when I add ?useskin=lia. There's just a glitch where it doesn't load the JavaScript unless it's on MediaWiki:Lia.js. I'll try and see if I can fix it later. It may be beneficial to update the skin, too. Should I just do that on GitHub? I could add the mobile skin, too, but I think that would only be the primary mobile skin on LMBW. I don't see any of the other sites using it. Drew1200 (talk)

It'd be best to do it on GitHub, yeah. --ToaMeiko (talk) 13:01, 5 October 2013 (EDT)

Blogs Bug

Oh, sorry, I didn't see your message. I reported it. Drew1200 (talk)

Main Pages

  • Sure, do you mean to create another page and the mobile skin redirect there, or to use the same page but work on some mobile CSS? (I don't really know how mobile skins work) NovaHawk 20:00, 7 October 2013 (EDT)
    • Mobile CSS would be ideal with @media screen (would have to be done in MediaWiki:Common.css. --ToaMeiko (talk) 20:02, 7 October 2013 (EDT)
      • Is this the basic idea you're going for the mobile skin? I know there's some issues with the left/right alignment on the background, just wanted to check that that's ok before doing any more (and I'll have to leave it at that for few hours anyway :) ) NovaHawk 00:40, 8 October 2013 (EDT)
        • Yeah. As long as it's lightweight, easily navigable, and easy to read on, it'll be good for mobile. --ToaMeiko (talk) 11:26, 8 October 2013 (EDT)

Meta MP

  • Thanks for adding that logo in, it looks much better than the text. Just wondering how's it looking on mobile- I like the size of the logo on a computer screen, but does it fit ok on a smaller device? NovaHawk 01:57, 15 October 2013 (EDT)
    • Here. --ToaMeiko (talk) 15:00, 15 October 2013 (EDT)
      • Hmm.. so you think it would be better to edit the mobile CSS so it's be shrunk down so the whole "Brickimedia" fits, or just leave it as is? NovaHawk 19:15, 15 October 2013 (EDT)
        • Shrink it down of course. --ToaMeiko (talk) 19:56, 15 October 2013 (EDT)
          • here's what it looks like now [1] --ToaMeiko (talk) 21:36, 16 October 2013 (EDT)

I have finally decided...

For the Refreshed skin, I like the spinny animation thingy on the wikis menu more than the flippy animation thingy on the user menu. Drew1200 (talk)

  • Alright. Do you think it is deserving of a poll or should I just change it? --ToaMeiko (talk) 13:40, 26 October 2013 (EDT)

Meta MP First Paragraph

"Welcome to Brickimedia Meta, the global meeting place and coordination site for Brickimedia projects. Meta is for discussion of Brickimedia coordination, global changes, documentation, recording of Brickimedia Association statistical data and information, global image hosting, and much more." Doesn't the bold just say the same thing? SirComputer (talk) 05:21, 31 October 2013 (EDT)

  • Yes, however the first sentence is used to describe the site, and the second sentence lists the purpose and activities in which the site is used for. If it bothers you, ill rewriye it, but honestly there is nothing wrong with it. --ToaMeiko (talk) 10:22, 31 October 2013 (EDT)

Well, I tried logging in on my regular account that you made, but I still didn't get the email. So I made this secondary account.

Can I have my patroller rights back?

Also, it appears there's no link to the talk page from the user profile.

--KronJay (talk) 12:38, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

  • Yes, and I can merge/rename the accounts for you. --ToaMeiko (talk) 14:45, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

eh

Why is "herp" an option on the sidebar? :P MsD (Talk) 16:37, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

  • It says "help". It goes to the help page index. --ToaMeiko (talk) 16:53, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

Old features

Are we going to use the friends list/private messages/leaderboard features from last time?

(Also, is CAPTCHA permanent? Will autoconfirmed users no longer be prompted by it? Is there a way to make the CAPTCHA appear in the initial editing screen? Are you wondering why I'm asking so many questions?)

--ErkelonJay (talk) 20:02, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

  • Those social features were disabled, partially because they're a hassle to work with, and also because they don't serve much benefit. The leaderboard is still enabled I believe. The CAPTCHA isn't active once you get autoconfirmed status. --ToaMeiko (talk) 21:12, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

Checkuser

  • Would I possibly be able to have temporary checkuser rights on en/customs/meta for a few days, used to solely to deal with the spambots that have been popping up? (sorry if I'm out of line for just asking for them, but with no board, there's do discussion on how many/even if there are going to be checkusers on sites, so I don't really know what else to do) NovaHawk 20:35, 1 November 2013 (EDT)

Global Block Database

Nova and I agree that it'd be helpful to have all the global blocks wiped. Drew1200 (talk)

Re:Just so you are aware

  • Yeah, I've been trying to remember to untick that "automatically block the last IP address.." box, and I've been meaning to ask you- does the "prevent account creation box" prevent the user account from creating another account, or does it stop the IP from making an account? And Drew's got an issue on GitHub going here about the IP glitch NovaHawk 02:46, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
  • [2] <-- Does this mean we're planning to have wikis in other languages up and running soon (as in before open beta finishes)? NovaHawk 05:55, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
    • Not necessarily, but help pages should be internationalised anyways. --ToaMeiko (talk) 06:03, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Tech Support

Hello Toa. Haven't talked to you a while, been busy over at my wiki Biblicalapedia. I've been checking up on the site, and see the site is in open beta. I was wondering if perhaps you could fulfill my query I asked in the IRC a while back, about being a Technical Support. This would not be a full time one-hundred percent obligation, but I would be able to be pretty active, primarily on the weekends. Feel free to contact me via Special:EmailUser (if that is correct for Brickimedia) to more quickly reply back for I may not check this wall as often. --Superdadsuper (talk) 23:39, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

You are free to contribute to discussions on GitHub Issues. There's no other technical support anywhere in the Brickimedia project. --ToaMeiko (talk) 23:41, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

What about (later on) answering bug queries, taking suggestions, and posting updates about Brickimedia what they've done (more efficiently than going through and reading bit-by-bit what has happened.
