Black Cat is the alias of Felicia Hardy.
Background
Felicia's father, Walter Hardy, was a renowned cat burglar. He encouraged her to never settle for second best at what she does.
After a close friend sexually assaulted her, she began practicing acrobatics and various fighting styles. She planned on murdering him, but he was killed in a drunk driving accident before she could. Furious that she was denied to take the life of her assailant, she decided to utilize her obtained skills to follow in her father's footsteps.
She first donned her outfit to break her father out of prison, only to meet Spider-Man. She kept the Black Cat persona as a misguided attempt to attract Spider-Man's affection.
The two would eventually have an ongoing relationship and Spider-Man would later reveal himself to her as Peter Parker. Despite her disappointment behind him being an average man, they continued the relationship. Peter was upset, but stayed with her because of this being the first time he had revealed his identity to someone.
During Spider-Man's involvement in the Secret Wars, Felicia was granted an infectious "bad luck" power. She wanted this so that she would no longer be a liability to her lover. Once he returned, she kept it a secret. However, this power began to permanently jinx Spider-Man, so the two split.
Since then, there have been a few affairs. She still loved Spider-Man, but had to move on as he had already done. User:1999bug/MarvelStuff
