The Mobile Skid Steer Arm is a robot created by Nxtstep101. It was created as an entry into the unofficial NXTLog Mobile Arm Building Challenge started by myself and a couple other NXTLogsters. My goal was to make it have the ability to grab and lift with one motor and be as small as possible. This has basically the same functions as a stationary arm except it can move from place to place.

Chassis

The chassis was built to support a skid steer drive. I made the chassis strong and sturdy to keep the axles from bending under the pressure of the weight. It took me a few different tries to get the chassis right but in the end it all worked together perfectly.

Hand and Lifting Mechanism

The grabbing and lifting mechanism was my favorite part of the build, it also took me a few different tries to get the mechanism perfect. Here's how it works: The motor (which is geared down 5:1) pulls the collection of beams that link to a Lego TECHNIC beam that pulls an axle with two bevel gears attached, they turn two other bevel gears that turn two other gears that close the grabber. Then when it fully grips the cup it begins to lift; it can only lift a few inches of the ground. The mechanism was designed to be able to increase the grip on the object the heavier the object is.
