Background
Dr Jonathan Crane was a brilliant psychiatrist and chemist, employed at Arkham Asylum. In his early life, Crane lived with abuse from his father, both physically and mentally. He often was subjected to paranoia and hallucinations, only finding help from a school counsellor. Despite the aid given to him to recover from his fears, Crane still bore the scars of his upbringing, physically looking frail as a child.
Crane eventually became obsessed with fear, and not just his own. After graduating college taking courses in chemistry and psychology, Crane moved to Gotham and began to perform fear-inducing experiments on the inmates/patients. He then decided to establish his own criminal identity, calling himself the "Scarecrow," taking its visage and causing fear to spread around Gotham City.
