He has a red head printed with various lines to depict his sunken skull like head and he has an angry expression. His all black torso is printed his leather jacket and dark brown belt featuring a silver buckle with the HYDRA logo. The back is printed with the creases of the of the jacket, the back of his strap, and the continuation of his brown belt. He has plain black legs.
Johann Schmidt was the test subject for the original super soldier serum. It worked, but it reduced his head to a red skull. Schmidt then became the Red Skull, the leader of HYDRA.
He was battling Captain America when Iron Man arrived to help, Skull used a gun that seemingly vaporized Captain America. However, when Iron Man arrived to battle HYDRA alongside The Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Falcon, they found out that Captain America was still alive, but had his mind switched with Red Skull's, courtesy of MODOK, due to imperfections in the original serum were killing him. Fortunately, the Avengers got Captain America and Red Skull into their own bodies. However, MODOK used his powers to strip Iron Man of his armour and the arc reactor keeping him alive and put it on Red Skull, who dubbed himself the Iron Skull. Later, while the Avengers (save for Iron Man) were fighting each other due to mind-control, Red Skull placed a potent bomb in the arc reactor of the Avenger's mansion, but the bomb was shot into space before it exploded.
After escaping, Red Skull decided he needed a team like the Avengers, only of villains. So he sent out request messages to various of the world's worst villains, but only MODOK, Dracula, Hyperion, and Attuma accepted his offer and they formed the Cabal.
