User blog:Brikkyy13/Avengers: Age of Ultron - a review

From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

Last night I was lucky enough to go to the premiere of the new Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, and now I'm here, giving my thoughts in a review. I'll try to keep this spoiler-free (except in the plot section) but if I can't manage that all spoilers will be marked.

Thoughts on the film

Overall, it was a great film. I personally believe that it was better than the first one, there were a lot of things done better.

The first thing that I feel was done better is the story. While there never really is a reason given for why Ultron goes mad, the story covers a lot of points including a love story. I feel that the story was really driven by the new characters, and not so much the old ones. SPOILER This is evident in Quicksilver's sacrifice. It really drove the end of the story, with Hawkeye's safe return to his family and Scalet Witch's triumph over Ultron and his army.

Another thing that was done better is the acting in general. Everyone really gave it their all, even Scarlett Johansson! (while she was still bad, it wasn't as bad as some of her other roles. *cough*lucy*cough*). Even though he had no physical screen time, James Spader stole the show. His portrayal of Ultron was amazing and down right demonic. Only James Spader could sincerely tell a man with no arm that he'll be all right!

The last thing I feel was better in this film was the comedy. Sure, the original Avengers had its moments, but this one really hit its stride. In between the action and character development there were a lot of jokes. My favorite line from the whole film has to be "If you get killed, walk it off."

As I just stated this film contains a huge amount of character development. We get to see into the world of the characters and the film really benefits from it. In the last film it was just "look over here! All your favorite characters in one film! Watch Hulk punch Thor!" but in this film it goes way deeper.

Other than the fact that there's no post-credit scene (boo!!!!!!!!) I don't think this film has any downfalls. It has the perfect balance of action and character development, the writers really hit the mark. I think this film has set a new standard for super hero films, and it will be incredibly hard to top. Overall, it was a really great film and I would recommend it to everyone.

For those of you who can't wait to see the film, below is an outline of the plot,

Plot - WARNING: SPOILERS

THIS SECTION CONTAINS A DETAILED OUTLINE OF THE FILM. IF YOU DO NOT WISH FOR THE FILM TO BE SPOILED PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS SECTION.

The film opens with earth's mightiest heroes ransacking a Hydra fortress in an attempt to steal back Loki's scepter. While The Avengers try to break into the fortress, Baron Von Strucker is advised to let Hydra's new experiments onto the battlefield. Strucker refuses, however the Maximoff twins leave anyway. Quicksilver has some fun with Captain America, while Scarlet Witch stays behind to guard the scepter.

Iron Man manages to get into the fortress (with a little help from the Iron Legion) and immediately starts looking for the scepter. While he tries to locate it, he downloads all of Hydra's secrets onto a USB-like device. Tony eventually finds the scepter, but before he can steal it Scarlet Witch pulls some sort of mind trick and convinces Tony that all the Avengers died because of him. He does break free and steals the scepter, much to Quicksilver's dismay.

As Tony is leaving the compound, the rest of the Avengers arrive. Scarlet Witch and Captain America have a small fight, but eventually everyone escapes. Black Widow calms down The Hulk and earth's mightiest heroes board the Quinjet.

The Avengers return to the tower in New York City and begin debriefing. Thor gives Tony and Bruce 3 days to study the scepter before he has to take it back to Asgard. While they conduct their studies, Tony downloads all the information from Hydra into his computers and discovers an anomaly. Tony discovers a peace-keeping program which he decides will bring "peace on earth." He tells Bruce of his plans to create "Ultron," but he immediately tells him that it's a bad idea. Tony ignores Bruce and sets out to recode the program for his own purposes.

Tony instructs Jarvis to let him know when the Ultron program is finished, but Jarvis says it will take a long time because of the encryption. Tony joins the rest of the Avengers for a house party, in which the Black Widdow/Bruce Banner love sub-plot is introduced. Stan Lee also has his cameo in this scene; Thor is drinking an Asgardian concoction that he claims has been aged for a thousand years and no mortal could withstand it. Stan Lee immediately disagrees and demands a drink. Thor reluctantly gives in and pours Stan the Man some. After one sip Stan stumbles away in a drunken stupor, mumbling "excelsior" to himself.

During the party, Jarvis finishes decoding the Ultron program and it gains sentience. Ultron immediately begins his mission of peace on earth, and researches humanity as a whole, eventually deciding that the greatest threat to humanity is itself. Ultron disables Jarvis and builds himself a body out of spare Iron Legion parts. He then crashes the Avenger's drinking games and begins to monologue about his duty. Ultron activates the Iron Legion and steals Loki's scepter, causing Thor to destroy him in a rage. Ultron uploads his program to the Internet and escapes.

The Avengers frantically try to locate Ultron, the Iron Legion and the sceptor, but there's not trace anywhere. Ultron has stolen what's left of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files and run off with them. Ultron constructs himself a new body and an army. He decides that the Avengers must be destroyed if his plan is to succeed, so he enlists the help of the Maximoff twins to help him do so.

Now, I'm can't remember exactly what happens here, but this is the gist. Ultron needs Vibranium for his evil plan, he steals some, Avengers show up to stop him, Scarlet Witch brainwashes half the Avengers, Iron Man fights Ultron, Ultron escapes.

After Ultron escapes, the twins continue their mission to destroy the Avengers. Scarlet Witch brainwashes the Hulk, and sets him free on the nearby city. Iron Man plays hero and dons the Hulkbuster armor. The Hulk and Iron Man get in a heated fight that goes on for a while, but eventually Iron Man prevails. The battered Avengers board the Quinjet and leave for the one place they know Ultron won't find them.

The Avengers arrive at the safe house, Hawkeye's farm. Here it is revealed that Hawkeye has a wife and children. The Avengers stay with them until Ultron shows himself again.

Meanwhile, Ultron is busy doing evil stuff. He takes control of a scientific research center and uses an organic matter creator to create a cyborg. He powers it using the infinity stone that was concealed in Loki's scepter to power his creation. Ultron plugs himself into it and begins to download his memory into the cyborg. Scarlet Witch seases the opportunity and reads the cyborgs mind. She discovers that she and her brother are being used by Ultron as pawns.

Meanwhile, Nick Fury shows up at Hawkeye's farm with a "never give up" speech and Thor goes away looking for answers. During this, the Avengers realize they've lost contact with the doctor at the lab and put two and two together. The Avengers show up just as the twins realize they're being used. Ultron loads his cyborg into a truck and escapes into the city.

With the help of the twins, the Avengers manage to stop Ultron from downloading his memory into the cyborg. While Ultron gets away yet again, the Avengers steal the cyborg and take it back to the tower. Tony decides that the best way to combat Ultron is to load Jarvis (who was since re-enabled) into the Cyborg. Captain America and Scarlet Witch strongly disagree with this, fearing that the Ultron program will prevail yet again and a fight breaks out in the group. Thor returns during this fight and powers up the cyborg. He explains how he had a vision and that the cyborg is the only way to defeat Ultron and dubs the cyborg Vision.

Vision explains that while he has Ultron's memories he is different, and tells the Avengers of Ultron's plan. Vision hands Thor his hammer and tells everybody to get ready.

Meanwhile, Ultron is conducting the final stage of his plan. He has selected a European city and has used the last of the Vibranium to create an anti-gravity device. As the Avengers arrive at the city, Ultron's plan is realized. Ultron uses his device to pull the city from the ground and the Avengers realize that he will drop it to create a mass-extinction event.

The Avengers (including the twins) begin destroying Ultron's army while making their way to the center of the city (the place where Ultron's device is). During this time, Iron Man realizes that there's a way to vaporize the entire city, including everyone in it. Captain America refuses to let everyone die, but Black Widow explains that it's either a few thousand people or all life on Earth. Before Cap can answer, Nick Fury arrives in an old helicarrier and the mission becomes clear. The city is evacuated onto the Helicarrier with the help of The Avengers and War Machine.

Once the city has been, for the most part, evacuated the Avengers return to Ultron's device and guard it. If even one of Ultron's soldiers were to reach it the whole city would fall back to Earth. The Avengers weaken Ultron's army and Scarlet Witch insists thatshe can hold off what's left. The rest of the Avengers escape as Iron Man gets ready to vaporize the city.

As Hawkeye is boarding the "lifeboat" that will take him to the Helicarrier a mother begs him to help rescue her son. He runs to help just as Ultron returns in a stolen Quinjet. He opens fire on Hawkeye and the boy. Hawkeye covers the child, acting as a human shield, protecting him from the storm of bullets. Quicksilver sees this and runs in front of the two. Quicksilver sacrifices himself so Hawkeye and the boy can live.

Hawkeye and the boy escape as Scarlet Witch watches her brother bleed out. She lets out a dramatic "nooooooooooooooooo!" as her powers go crazy and destroy the last of Ultron's army. She immediately seeks revenge and pulls down Ultron's Quinjet. As the Avengers escape onto the Helicarrier, Iron Man and Thor prepare to vaporize the city as Scarlet Witch destroys Ultron. As the City is destroyed, Vision rescues Scarlet Witch and returns her to the Helicarrier. Iron Man and Thor escape too.

Vision leaves the Helicarrier to find the last Ultron drone on the ground in a forest. Ultron has downloaded himself into the last body and prepares to escape yet again, but Vision stops him, and destroys Ultron once and for all.

The Avengers return to a new base and wind down from the ordeal. As everybody wraps up, Black Widow learns that Hulk has gone AWOL and is devastated. The film ends as Captain America oversees a new team of avengers consisting of Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine and Falcon.

Credits roll for a bit

The infinity gauntlet is shown, floating in a chamber. A hand picks it up and puts it on. The camera pans up to reveal Thanos.

Yay, now it's my time to steal the spotlight from Brikky. :P Anyway thanks for letting me and Nova (or anyone else who isn't American) post our reviews here here.

The movie was a lot better than the first and somehow felt less crowded. I recommend everyone to see the film, even those who didn't like the first. The jokes are quite funny and the action scenes are good. The actors pull off amazing performances (those Russian accents are spot on).

Spoilers

  • Iron Man-Well him coming back wasn't explained at all. Could Hank Pym not have helped the science bros assemble Ultron? Iron Man wasn't at his best here.
  • Captain America-He was a good leader and I liked how he was stern, not everyone has to be constantly making jokes.
  • Thor-Thor was at his funniest here. He didn't have anything to do really and the bath scene was stupid. I'm all for a wet shirtless Chris Hemsworth but it didn't further the plot, it was shaky, and he could've easily had the vision another way.
  • Black Widow-Ugh. I hated her here. She was likable in Captain America the Winter Solider but here no. The romance was stupid and unneeded. I didn't like how she wanted to leave either.
  • Hulk-It was already established Bruce Banner now has the power to control the Hulk, but that went out the window here. I didn't like how he wanted to leave, surely when he rejoined the avengers he was convinced he isn't evil in hulk form. They should've reminded him after he got upset.
  • Hawkeye-He was likable here. His family was cute and it was nice how he kept it a secret from everyone besides himself. It was kinda funny he was injured straight way.
  • Scarlett Witch-Loved her, my favorite character by far. She had my favorite power, and she could be one of the most powerful avengers if she used it correctly. I liked how she was a bit overwhelmed yet she came over her fears. I liked how she avenged her brothers death and she did it powerfully. Elizabeth Olsen portrayed her perfectly and she deserves props for being less famous then her sisters but having a lot more talent.
  • Quicksliver-Who knew Aaron Taylor-Johnson was so hot? Seriously that accent suited him perfectly. :P The white, black and blue contrasted his skin perfectly. Okay enough fan girdling. I liked his catchphrase and it was so sad at the end. His death scene was so powerful. You kill off the second hottest member instead of Black Widow ;(
  • Vision-Didn't have a whole ton to do. Eh I guess he was okay. I like they're reasoning for his cape.
  • Ultron-Boring villian, I don't know why Marvel can't write a good one besides Loki.
  • War Machine-Yay he had something to do! It was very natural as well. It's going to be awkward in civil war since it will be War Machine versus Iron Man.
  • Falcon-Could he not have helped War Machine!? He did not deserve to be an avenger as he did nothing.
  • Maria Hill/Female doctor/Thor's scientist friend/Nick Fury-No need for these characters really. I'm glad they didn't die here as newcomers wouldn't care. I guess the actors did their best with the material they we're given. But why wasn't Linsday Lohan green lit for the roll of Maria, she auditioned and everything! :P
  • F.R.I.D.A.Y.-Eh was there a need for her? I think there could've been a better solution then resulting in a Siri wannabe.
  • Pepper/Jane should've been here
  • Plot-Eh it was a bit generic, we've seen robots taking over the world multiple times now. The character interactions were the best part and I love how it didn't seem over crowded.
  • Visions-The vision the characters had were stupid and they didn't seem like they're biggest fears.
  • Language-Yes it was pretty funny how they kept bringing it up. But the amount of kids who are going to know bad words after seeing this will be a ridiculous amount.
  • Jokes-They we're all funny but it made it more of a comedy then an action movie.
  • New Team-See Nova's comment.
Well thanks for reading. :3

Nice review Soup, pretty much agree with you on everything there :)

The more I think about the Bruce/Natasha thing, the more I don't like it. I dunno, I liked the chemistry the Black Widow and Cap had in The Winter Soldier, seems like we won't be seeing anything like that anymore.

But why did you want to see Jane and Pepper but not see Hill and Fury? Jane and Pepper are pointless/boring/not relevant to the events, but the other two aren't :P

Excellent review!

Anyway, 2 minor things in reply
1- having just gone to see the movie again, I paid a little more attention to the Russian accents and they do slip up from time to time (particularly Elizabeth Olsen)
2- If you think Ultron was boring and Loki wasn't, you're clearly living in another planet :P Loki is one of the most boring villains in movie history (second to the one in Die Hard 5), Ultron is amazing.

Really? Even if you don't like Loki or find him boring there is much worse out there (including, yes, most Marvel movie villains).

Nice review Brikkyy :) I didn't read the plot section, because, well, that's kinda pointless to me, because I may or may not have managed to go to a certain advance screening of this :P Anyway here's a review of mine, it's not quite so positive as Brikkyy's review, but still a solid 4-4.5 stars overall from me. (Brikkyy, if you feel like I'm hijacking your blog, please feel free to tell me to delete this comment :P)

Warning: the rest of this comment contains spoilers

The good
  • Right from the opening, it was hilarous. I did not see that first word of the film coming, followed by Cap's "Language", which became sort of a running joke :P The humour was still there from the other Marvel films, which is great. I like my superhero films lighthearted. The dark and dingy DC films bore me to death, I literally stopped watching the Batman vs. Superman trailer 3/4 of the way through (no, I'm not a DC hater, I love Arrow and The Flash).
  • The action scenes were all pretty well done, there were a lot of stunts and fight sequences there that we haven't seen in the previous films, and it was especially great to see some of those team-up attacks, which you would only get in an Avengers movie (as opposed to a standalone Marvel hero movie)
  • I guess I liked some of the softer moments with Natasha, both being "aunty Nat" and between both Banner and the Hulk. I don't get why she kept saying "the sun's getting really low" though :S
  • Vision. I'm liking what we've seen of him so far.
  • Scarlet Witch. She was fairly minor and not too amazing in this film, but I think she has potential to be a pretty cool character in the future.
  • Quicksilver dying. I didn't like him. Ok, that's not completely true. It's not that I don't like him, it's just that I didn't find him to be an interesting character, and I think a slot on the Avengers team could be filled by someone better. I'm wondering if they did some sort of deal with Fox? Fox gets the cool/funny Quicksilver but Wanda's just a kid who appears for a couple of seconds and has no mention of powers, while Marvel gets the Scarlet Witch but only has Quicksilver for one film? Or maybe Marvel just knew they'd have an extremely hard time competing with Fox's Quicksilver so didn't really try to. Either way, killing him off was a great move, like Brikkyy said, his death definitely had an impact (on me at least) at the end of the film.
  • The big changeup- switching four Avengers is a big move, but I like it. It'll keep things interesting. And although we only saw them for a few seconds, I'm loving the Falcon and Scarlet Witch Avengers costumes. Also, unlike Iron Man and the Hulk, Thor and Hawkeye will almost inevitably be back on the team once Hawkeye renovates his house and Thor decides to come back to Earth.
The bad
  • This would be the only big negative from me. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the whole Ultron thing. Making a random artificial intelligence from Loki's sceptre, and then deploying it straight to Stark's whole system (which is linked to the rest of the entire world via the Internet) without even testing it out in a small isolated environment first? No. That just wouldn't happen. Yes, we've seen that Stark's daring, likes to try things out first (like taking his Mark 2 suit out of a test flight instead of waiting for Jarvis to run diagnostics in the first Iron Man film). But I just don't find it even remotely believable that Stark and Banner would be so dumb as to get a super-complex AI they don't even understand and give it full access to their systems.
  • Why is Tony Stark even in the Avengers still? This isn't explained at all. He gave up on being Iron Man at the end of Iron Man 3, now he's back, and making a stack of suits again? Why did he go and blow all his suits up if all he did was rebuild them?
  • I didn't read any spoilers beforehand, but there was nothing in there that really surprised me. I like twists or things I don't see coming, or maybe even a slightly more complex story. I dunno. The overall plot just seemed a bit predictable to me to be completely honest.
  • Those scenes where they all had visions. I dunno, they just seemed overly long and a bit of a waste of screen time. I still don't really get why Thor needed Selvig either.
  • While I did enjoy the fight scenes, at times, it did feel like I'd seen it all in the first film- a big unbeatable faceless army going up attacking a team head-on. A lot of the plot just felt a bit repetitive at times.
  • F.R.I.D.A.Y (J.A.R.V.I.S.' replacement AI for Iron Man). I had problems making out what she was saying at times, I never had that problem with Jarvis. I think Friday's an older system so the voice quality wasn't meant to be as good as Jarvis, but still... although maybe it was just my hearing :P
  • Those Hawkeye scenes. I don't dislike Hawkeye, and I think his character majorly improved in this film. But it's like they were trying too hard to make people think that Hawkeye was an important and worthy member of the Avengers. I just think they were overselling him a bit much. And, he still comes off as being vastly inferior to the rest. I think they need to work on him, make him a bit better somehow, he just seems like a dude running around kinda aimlessly with a bow and arrow while all the other Avengers are off being awesome. He needs to be more like Oliver Queen in Arrow- not his personality, but I think the way he fights needs to be a bit more aggressive and cool-looking.
  • That kid that resulted in Quicksilver's death. Seriously, what a dumb kid. Everyone's running for the rescue ships, and he's just sitting in the rubble doing nothing? He wasn't even trapped under anything. I would've bought that scene if he was trapped, but he wasn't. What was his problem? It's like he was asking to be killed. Hawkeye should have just left him there.
  • The mid-credits scene. Boooooring.
  • No post-credits scene. There was none. I hate credits. And because it was a Marvel movie, I watched them. For no reason.

Anyway, all in all, a great movie, probably about what I was expecting though. It wasn't as good as the first one to me- not because it wasn't the same quality as the first one, but that whole first-time superhero team up in the first Avengers was such a huge event. These days, multiple superheroes in a movie is just kinda taken for granted. But I would still definitely recommend seeing it. I'm sure it'll still be the second-best film of the year.

Note: the kid wasn't trapped under anything, he couldn't climb out :P You'd think that his mother would make sure he's with her before she boards the lifeboat thing.

@Soup: Scarlet Witch dyed her hair? :P You must have been looking at the top half of the screen and I was looking at the bottom :D

However, I take back everything bad I said about Hawkeye :D

When I went to see Furious 7 again today with a friend after class, I saw a trailer for it that looked really good. Only thing I don't like about the trailer is Hulkbuster vs Hulk... Basically doesn't fit in with the rest of the trailer imo. I'll probably see this movie at some point though.
