Background
LEGO Basketball was a theme that ran from 2003 to 2004.
Details
The Basketball theme was originally liscensed by the NBA in 2003, ending the next year. These sets were based on real games, court games, and simple street games.
The minifigures in this theme were known for their special design. It took these LEGO designers some time to mold the figures so that they could actually hold a small basketball piece in their arms. They were also modeled to hold springs inside their legs, for slam dunks and reverse slam dunks.
These minifigures also featured more realistic skin tones, being based on real-life NBA players from real teams.
