== Background ==
Gandalf the Grey, later Gandalf the White, is a [[Wizard]] and a Maia (minor god). In [[The Hobbit]], Gandalf, Bilbo, and a company of Dwarves set out to go to the Lonely Mountain. Gandalf is one of the five Maia sent by the Valar to help Middle-Earth defeat Sauron. These five Maia are known as the Istari (Quenya: "Wise Ones"), or more commonly, wizards. The other four Istari are Saruman, the Maia of men, Radagast, the Maia of animals, and two "Blue Wizards" whose purpose is unknown. Gandalf is the Maia of the elves.

In [[The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring|The Fellowship of the Ring]], Gandalf [[9469 Gandalf Arrives|arrives]] for Bilbo's Birthday Party in the Shire. He heads out for Minas Tirith, to read an account of Isildur; and finds out the One Ring has markings on it. Gandalf heads back to the Shire; he later goes to Isengard, to tell his friend, Saruman the White. Saruman betrays Gandalf, telling him he and himself should join forces with Sauron. Gandalf escapes Orthanc on eagle, named Gwaihir; Gandalf flies to Rivendell. There in Rivendell, the fate of the Ring is decided, and the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. Gandalf leads the Fellowship to Moria, where he falls.

Gandalf returns in [[The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers|The Two Towers]], as Gandalf the White, who has returned to complete his task. In Fangorn Forest, [[Aragorn]], [[Legolas]], and [[Gimli]] find Gandalf there as the the White Wizard. They travel to Edoras, to 'awaken' King [[Theoden]] who has been poisoned the Saruman. Gandalf uses magic telling Saruman that he will "... draws you ... like poison from a wound." Theoden is young again, and Grima Wormtongue is thrown out of Edoras, as an enemy where he goes to Isengard. Gandalf leaves [[Aragorn]], [[Legolas]], and [[Gimli]] and goes to bring back [[Eomer]] and [[Rohirrim Soldier]]s back to help Rohan. They come to Helm's Deep on "first light on the fifth day." [[9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep|The Battle of Helm's Deep]] is over.    

In [[The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King|The Return of the King]], Gandalf, [[Theoden]], [[Aragorn]], [[Legolas]], and [[Gimli]] ride from [[9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep|Helm's Deep]] to Isengard, to deal with Saruman. They find at the entrance of Isengard, [[Merry]] and [[Pippin]]; they ride to the center of Isengard, the tower, Orthanc. Saruman is above talking to them, he tells Gandalf "What do you want Gandalf Greyhem? The Key of Orthanc, or perhaps the keys of Barad-dûr itself, along with the crowns of the seven kings, and the rods of the five wizards?" Saruman shows them the Palantír, he then shots fire at Gandalf, Saruman's staff had been broken. At night [[Pippin]] looks into the Palantír and sees Minas Tirith in flames; Sauron's plan is realized. Gandalf and Pippin ride to the Gondorian white city of Minas Tirith. They go see Lord Denethor, Lord and Stewart of Gondor, and Father of [[Boromir]] and Faramir; Denthor tells Gandalf "And I tell you know, I will not bow to this ranger of the north..." and Gandalf reminds Denethor "The authority to deny the return of the king has not been given to you, Stewart." During the Siege of Gondor, Gandalf took command, and helped the soldiers of Gondor agains the Orcs of Mordor. Pippin comes running telling him Denethor "has lost his mind, he's burning Faramir alive," Gandalf rushes to the top of the city. Along the way up, they encounter the Witch- King, he breaks Gandalf's staff, and tells him, "You have failed, the world of men shall fall" the Witch- King flees when he hears the horn of Rohan. Gandalf fights at the Black Gates; after the ring is destroyed, he brings [[Frodo]] and [[Samwise Gamgee|Sam]] to Minas Tirith. Gandalf crowns [[Aragorn]] as King of Gondor. He leaves Middle- Earth with Elrond, Galadriel, and [[Frodo]], for he has completed his task.
