Background
A French driver who races for an independent sponsor and who professes to believe in fair racing, Gray Ghost is none-the-less a willing participant in the fixing of races by the large motor corporations. He earned his nickname through his skill at weaving easily between cars. After Speed Racer rejects Royalton Industries' offer to sponsor him, Gray Ghost is the driver who causes Speed to crash out of the Fuji race on Royalton's orders. Gray Ghost goes on to win that race and qualify for the Grand Prix. There, he faces Speed Racer again, who had qualified later by winning the Crucible race. When the intended winner, Cannonball Taylor, is crashed out of the race by Speed, Gray Ghost moves into the lead, but is easily dealt with by Speed in the final stretch of the race.
