Background

Captain Jack Sparrow was given pirate lordship over the Caribbean by his father, Captain Teague. At some point after commiting an act of piracy, he was branded a pirate by Cutler Beckett. In order to be free and sail the seas, he had Davy Jones raise the ship, the Black Pearl from the oceans depths for him, Davy Jones gave him 13 years captaincy before he had to serve aboard the Flying Dutchman. Jack acquired a crew for his ship, however after two years he gave up the bearing to Isla de Muerta by use of his magical compass. His first mate, Hector Barbossa mutinied against him and marooned him on an island with nothing but a pistol with one shot. The island, Rumrunner's isle, was a holding location for the Rumrunner's rum, and after three days Jack was able to barter his way off the island. Over the next ten years he became famous in pirate lore by convincing the public he escaped by wading in the shallows and escaping on a raft of sea turtles.

In The Curse of the Black Pearl, he arrives in Port Royal in search of a ship. He narrowly escapes Commodore James Norrington and his men after he rescues drowning, Elizabeth Swann. He is confronted by Will Turner in the blacksmith and the two duel with their cutlasses. He is then knocked unconscious by John Brown and put in a cell. After learning that Will Turner is the son of Bootstrap Bill, a member of his former crew who was sent to the depths for standing up to Barbossa after the mutiny, he agrees to a deal with Will where the two commandeer a ship in Port Royal and head out to rescue kidnapped, Elizabeth. In Tortuga, he acquires a crew including old friend, Joshamee Gibbs. When they arrive at Isla De Muerta, Will betrays him and leaves him behind to rescue Elizabeth. After the cursed crew blow up the ship, the Interceptor and Will reveals himself the descendant, Barbossa maroons Jack on the island again with his pistol, and now Elizabeth. Elizabeth tricks him and sets most of the island on fire with the rum supplies. They are then rescued by the royal navy. Jack provides Norrington with a bearing to Isla De Muerta. He informs Barbossa of the navy floating offshore. When most of the cursed crew haveleft the island, he deceives Barbossa and shoots him with his one shot as Will lifts the curse.

In Dead Man's Chest, he infiltates a turkish prison to find information about Davy Jones, escaping with a cloth drawing of a key. He is confronted below deck by Bootstrap Bill, revealed to be part of Davy Jones' crew aboard the Flying Dutchman, and he informs Jack that his time is up and marks him with the black spot, meaning that the Kraken has been sent after him. He beaches the ship on island, Pelegosto, a cannibal island, where the natives believe Jack is a god in human form and they intent to release him from his "fleshy" prison. He narrowly escapes the island, with Pintel and Ragetti joining his crew. Will insists he needs Jack's compass. Jack offers him the compass if Will helps him find the key. After getting information from Tia Dalma, he send Will aboard a run aground ship, believed to be the Flying Dutchman. When the real Dutchman emerges from the depths, he makes a deal with Davy Jones to acquire 99 souls in 3 days to fulfill his debt. He attempts to find souls in Tortuga, on of which being a disgraced, now pirate, Norrington. Elizabeth also joins his crew. Using her and his compass, he gets a bearing to the Dead Man's Chest, which will give him the leverage to commanded Jones to call off the Kraken. However both Will and Norrington also want the chest for their own reasons and a duel ensues. The kraken is sent after Jack again after he finds Norrington stole the heart. During the attack, he flees in a longboat, before returning to the ship. Elizabeth successfully seduces and passionately kisses him while handcuffing him to the mast. The Kraken the drags the ship to the Locker.

In At World's End, he constantly has hallucinations of others and of himself, being unaware he is in Davy Jones' Locker. A desert stretching on forever. Thousands of pebbles form crabs and carry the Black Pearl to a shore where Jack is reunited with his remaining crew, Barbossa, Tia Dalma and Tai Huang. He plans to leave Will, Barboosa, Elizabeth, Pintel and Ragetti in the Locker, but cannot, as Barbossa possesses Sao Feng's charts, their only form of escape. He is constantly rivalled by Barbossa ina joint captainship. He learns from the soul of Weatherby Swann that he who stabs Jones' heat, becomes the immortal, next captain of the Flying Dutchman, and he arranges a deal with Will upon return to the real world, for him to lead Beckett to shipwreck Cove as part of Jack's deal with Beckett. He does this after having seen the now dead, Kraken and agreeing to Barbossa to join the Brethren Court. During the court, he calls for a vote for pirate king and breaks a stalemate by electing Elizabeth Swann. Elizabeth then trades him to Beckett in exchange for Will, with Jack ultimately ending up aboard the Dutchman. During the battle of Calypso's Maelstrom, he escapes the brig and steals the chest and is chased by Davy Jones around the Dutchman in a duel. He attempts to stab the heart, but helps Will to stab the heart after his is mortally stabbed by Jones. Beckett attempts to destroy the Pearl, but Will, now captain of the Flying Dutchman, assists the Pearl in destroying Beckett's ship the Endeavour. After the Pirate victory he and his crew go to Tortuga, where he is mutinied against again by Barbossa. However Barbossa was unaware Jack had cut out the centre of Sao Feng's navigational charts. Jack heads for the Fountain of Youth in a dingy as he is now in the same positionas he was before.

In On Stranger Tides, he is arrested in London by King George II's soldiers, but escapes and is forced aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of Blackbeard, headed for the Fountain of Youth...
