Ninjago is a theme introduced in January 2011. It uses elements from the previous Ninja series, but there are several noticeable changes from the previous series. These include the introduction of the Skeleton Army. The theme also includes vehicles for the skeletons. The theme is in a more mystical Japan setting than the Feudal Japan setting from the previous incarnation. One of the Ninjago's themes most unique elements is the battle game known as "Spinjitzu."

2011 Story
Long before time had a name, Ninjago was created by the first Spinjitzu master, by using the four weapons of Spinjitzu: The Scythe of Quakes, The Nunchucks of Lightning, the Shurikens of Ice, and the Sword of Fire. The weapons were so powerful, no one could handle all of their power at once. When he passed away, his two sons swore to protect them, but the oldest was consumed by darkness, and wanted to posses them. A battle between brothers broke-out, and the oldest was struck down and banished to the underworld. Peace returned, and the younger brother hid the weapons, but knowing his older brother's relentless ambition for power, he placed a guardian to protect them, and for fear of his own demise, a map for an honest man to hide. That honest man was Kai's father. The older brother is Lord Garmadon, and Sensei Wu, who is the younger brother, must find the weapons before Garmadon. Since Garmadon cannot leave the Underworld, he has struck a deal with Samukai and his skeleton army. In preparation, Sensei Wu has gathered four young ninjas, Kai, Jay, Cole, and Zane, to learn the ways of Spinjitzu. Only they can stop Lord Garmadon. But Kai was put in a trap and defeated by Garmadon. and the weapons were brought to the underworld. After the ninjas reached the bottom they used the tornado of creation to destroy the entire skulkin army. Wu was defeated by Samukai and grabbed all 4 weapons. But he exploded into a portal and Garmadon escaped and vowed that he will return strong enough to control the 4 weapons and recreate the world in his evil image.
2012 Story
Lord Garmadon sends an army of snake people called the Serpentine into Ninjago and they try to get the 4 Snake Staffs. Also from the LEGO Magazine it says there will be a Green Ninja joining the battle. However, at the moment his name is unknown. The trailer for the 2012 story, Rise of the Snakes, is on the Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu page.
Spinjitzu
The fighting style practiced by the characters of Ninjago is called Spinjitzu. This word was probably made because of Jujutsu and Ninjutsu, two types of fighting styles used by actual ninjas. The fighters spin around and draw on their elemental strengths to become tornadoes of energy and steel. Several sets in the game include special spinner parts, customized for different characters. Players select their characters, the weapons the character will hold, and a small deck of ability cards to influence the duel. The characters are placed into the spinners and spun at each other like tops, with the goal being to knock the opponent's minifigure down.

The Four Golden Weapons
The Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu are the secrets of victory over Lord Garmadon and his army of skeletons. There are four of them. The ninjas and skeletons are always on the search for these weapons.
- The Scythe of Quakes is a weapon that is new to LEGO. It has a golden staff, tooth, and a new piece that is like a lightsaber hilt but one side has a connector facing horizontally.
- The Shurikens of Ice are also new and are really two Weapons, but are used together. They are sometimes used with a staff.
- The Sword of Fire is a golden katana. A newer version of it has now been released. it is longer than a ninja mini fig, and from the hilt up it's a normal hilt which is holding a dragon head. The dragon is breathing the sword blade and flames.
- The Nunchucks of Lightning are made of a new short chain and two of the new hilt-like pieces used to make the Scythe of Quakes.
- No one knows if the new "Green Ninja" will have a golden weapon or not, but most likely not.
DX Ninja
DX is a special type of Ninjago ninja minifigure. These ninjas wear dragon clothing. The dragons on their suits are all breathing different kinds of elements (Cole, dragon breathing rock; Zane, dragon breathing ice; Jay, dragon breathing lightning; Kai, dragon breathing fire). The ninjas in their DX attire also have gold and red spinners. Ninjas become DX rank once they tame their respected dragon. Thus meaning it shows ranking among the ninjas. Strangely, all DX ninjas are sold in a Spinner Battle Pack (except for jay), no dragon included.
Kendo Ninja
Kendo Ninjas are the new versions of the ninjas. They have new helmets which resemble hockey masks and fencing helmets, and the same armour as the Samurai Warrior.
ZX Ninja
ZX is another type of ninja. These ninjas have shoulder pads similar to the ones worn by Setam, and a different ninja mask that has a gold or silver visor. The known ZX Ninjas are Zane, Jay, Cole, Kai and the Green Ninja (Ninjago).
Minifigures
Each character is normally aligned to a particular elemental colour.

Notes
- "Ninjago" is pronounced "Nin-JA-go".
- Several modern elements are shown in the movie, Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu including telephone poles leading to the blacksmith shop, an electric toothbrush used by Kai, and skyscrapers and satellite dishes shown in Jay's flashback.
- Unlike the larger sets in the line, the minifigures and weapons in the Spinner sets are made from a cheaper Chinese plastic, rather than the usual ABS.
- The video game LEGO Universe features two games areas unique to Ninjago.
- Crux Prime, a game world which features an area called the Maelstrom Quarry, which features a ruined Ninjago Monastery, a Ninja of Imagination named Neido, and Nuckal.
- The Ninjago Monastery, which unlike the movie, is not set upon a high mountain. Sensei Wu, Jay, Kai, Zane, Cole, Chopov, Krazi, Bonezai, and Frakjaw can be found here. It does not feature a training course.
- This is the second theme based on ninjas, one of Earth, Lightning, Fire and Ice.
- In 2012 the Skulkins will be replaced by Snake People.
- In 2012, Spinjitzu will feature many new elements to the game, such as the inclusion of Snake spinners, a training set, Kendo and ZX Ninjas, and the inclusion of booster packs to customize the spinners.
- Ninjago is the second lego theme to have skeletons as the main antagonist with the first being Castle) in 2007.
- Lego Club Magazine Nov.-Dec. said that there will be a green ninja.
- On the Ninjago website, the logo on the top is slowly turning green and scaly from left to right each day to count down the premiere of the new episodes and 2012 wave.
