Summary
"In the magical world of Chima, the ancient hunters spread their crushing ice across the land. Our heroes discover an ancient city atop Mount Cavora. Here, Laval and Cragger must prove themselves in a trial by fire, but with a little aid from the phoenix boy Flinx, they earn the powerful fire Chi. This new chi gives awesome new powers to them and their vehicles and helps the animals of Chima win their first battle against the hunters. Victory at last?" - Opening monologue
In the crocodile swamp, the hunters flee as Eris, Laval, and Cragger pursue them in their vehicles. Once they reach the fort, their fire Chi runs out and they are forced to cease their attack. Cragger wonders as to the location of his parents and the rest of his tribe who are nowhere to be found.
The hunters arrive back at their castle weary and defeated. Sir Fangar realizes that they must have received the fire Chi from the Phoenix and notice their temple is back atop Cavora. He decides that they must destroy the Phoenix and plans to reclaim the Crescent. Maula presents Fangar with their old Speedorz that she claimed Mungus fixed, (in truth [[Muttrot fixed them and Mungus only carried them) and they move out.
Laval and Lagravis drive back to the Lion City. Lagravis is still bewildered by the Phoenix and the story before the great story. Laval notes that he and Fluminox are are similar in that they both never laugh.
Eris returns to the Phoenix Temple atop Mount Cavora where she requests more fire Chi. Fluminox remains cautious until Tormak suggests the tribes prove their loyalty to him. The Phoenix King agrees and sends one member of each tribe to the Crescent to protect it.
As Laval and Eris drive off, Lagravis and Longtooth watch from Laval's bedroom. Lagravis asks Longtooth if he thinks he has a sense of humor. Longtooth at first tries to avoid the question, but eventually admits that Lagravis lacks a "funny bone."
At the Crescent, Laval tells those gathered about their task just as the Hunters arrive. Razar sets up a small snow gear shop where Bladvic purchases a blanket. Laval races down into battle on his speedor and he engages in a joust against Fangar. Eventually Mottrot and Vardy join in the frenzy against Cragger, Rogon and Worriz.
Back at Lion Temple, Longtooth tries several different ways to get Lagravis to laugh, (telling jokes, making silly faces, and adding googly eyes to the lion statues,) but it is all in vain.
Meanwhile the heroes have retreated inside the crescent and instead use their pulsors from inside the safety of the force field. Just then, Skinnit arrives and accidentally releases his odor. The heroes flee back outside the crescent to avoid the smell and are locked in hand-to-hand combat with the Hunters.
Lagravis and Longtooth reach the Lion City gate where the elder guard suggests tickling as a way to get the king to laugh. As he is about to persuade Leonidas to carry out the deed, a loud rumbling comes above them on Mount Cavora as the Blazing Bastion takes off from the Phoenix Temple.
Foltrax, Firox, and Frax fly it to the crescent and ambush the hunters. The heroes are then surprised as the crescent burns away, revealing a temple where the Bastion lands. Laval runs up as the Phoenix exit, but is stopped by Tormak. As Laval questions the tiger, he is interrupted by [[Li'ella of whom he is immediately smitten with. Fluminox congratulates the heroes on their success and presents them with Fire Chi before returning the their aircraft with Tormak.
Laval returns to the Lion City and tells Lagravis of Li'ella, causing the king of the lions to actually laugh.
