Synopsis
"It was Chima's coldest hour. The Hunters had launched their final attack on the lion city and Mount Cavora. The tribes of Chima, aided by the phoenix, fought bravely, turning the tide of the battle. There was even hope that we might even uncover the eight ancient fire wings, the only things powerful enough to save Chima. But then Sir Fangar released the ferocious ice bears. These are the Legends of Chima. The last Legends of Chima." - Opening monologue
Battle rages at the Lion City as the Hunters are bombarded by fire from the Chima tribes assisted by the phoenix and the tiger guards. As they retreat inside their fortress, Maula suggests that they surrender, but Sir Fangar remains confident that the ice bears will arrive. His statement proves correct as just then, the ice bears arrive and easily destroy the Chima vehicles. Lagravis declares to Lavertus that they are still unbeatable with the Blazing Bastion on their side. However, the Hunters gain access to the Chi in the sacred pool and use it to start their ice tower to Cavora, which the bastion smashes into and crashes.
Meanwhile, Cragger and Laval arrive at the Rhino Quarry to find Tormak and Li'ella there with the Rhino's "unbreakable" rock. Using the power of the artifact, Tormak is able to shatter it, revealing the seventh fire wing inside. Laval inquires if the two will join them at the Forever Rock to find the eighth and final harness, but the burned tiger claims that they have another matter to tend to.
On their way to the Forever Rock, Laval and Cragger notice the climbing ice tower. The lion pleads for them to go and help, but Cragger points out more troops on their way towards the city. As they fly closer, the two are shocked to discover that it is none other than the bears, who have actually awoken due to the ice bears. Bladvic explains that they have always had their mechs, but have been too tired to actually use them. Cragger and Laval continue onward to the Forever Rock as the bears arrive at the Lion City and battle the Ice Bears.
At the Forever Rock, they find Eris who has yet to locate the final fire wing harness. She then receives a vision from Fluminox, who encourages her to search forever. Using that information, she looks under the rock and finds the eight fire wing harness. Eris then tells Laval to summon the other five Chima heroes, though he lets her summon them.
As the ice tower climbs, Fluminox sits inside the hidden city meditating. Flinx inquires why he is smiling, to which Fluminox replies that he smiles for Eris. Just then, the Hunter's ice tower reaches Cavora and the floating mountain is frozen. As the Hunters advance into the floating city, they are met by the Phoenix Pilots and Tiger Guards.
Back at the Forever Rock, all the heroes have arrived and Eris explains how they will trigger the Illumination by flying into the heart of Cavora. While some of them are reluctant at first, Laval gives an inspiring speech and they all don their fire wings, taking off towards Cavora.
Meanwhile on Mount Cavora, the Hunters freeze the entire phoenix city and storm into the city of the mountain where Fluminox and Flinx are. Flinx encourages his father to fight, but the phoenix king remains confident that the fire wings are on their way. However Sir Fangar sends the entire Vulture tribe to deal with them. He then reveals that to Flinx that Fluminox was responsible for ruining the previous Illumination by refusing to jump into the heart of Cavora. The Hunter leader tries to attack Flinx, but Fluminox rushes into battle to protect his son.
Outside, the heroes try to evade the vultures. Tormak and Li'ella, piloting the Blazing Bastion arrive, leaving a clear path of Cavora. As they each fly into their tribe's head, Fluminox is overwhelmed by the Hunters and pinned down. He instructs his son to be the ninth phoenix of the Illumination. Just then, the heroes collide and Flinx jumps into the heart of the mountain, emerging as a large phoenix. Sir Fangar tries to attack him, but Flinx pushes the Hunters out of the mountain. He then sweeps through Chima, melting the ice and purifying the Hunters.
As the Illumination ends, Tormak and Li'ella land atop the phoenix city. As he is healed of his panther scars, Tormak is confident that the illumination worked perfectly. Inside the mountain, the heroes find themselves to be alive and climb out onto the top of the mountain as the phoenix city disappears. They observe the phoenix ascend gloriously to their mother son, while the Chima tribes celebrate their victory below. Cragger asks Laval what he sees and the lion delivers the final words as it is revealed that Chima is really just a small floating mountain in a much larger world.
