Background
The Overlord, who lived long before the ninja existed, created the Stone Army with an unbreakable material and turned half of Ninjago into Darkness. To prevent a war, The First Spinjitzu Master broke Ninjago in half; the dark side and the light side. The two sides drifted away from each other: the dark side became known as The Island of Darkness, and the light side became Ninjago. Eventually, it appears that The Island of Darkness sunk into the waters, with only a small "island" remaining above sea level. The Overlord and his army weren't seen for years until Lord Garmadon found the Dark Island and the Overlord instructed him on how to bring Island of Darkness back. Lord Garmadon did as the Overlord instructed, causing it to rise fully out of the water. The episode ends with Garmadon and the Overlord laughing maniacally. In the next episode, the Overlord leads Garmadon to a giant mechanical clock, forcing him to climb an impossibly high cliff to reach it. Garmadon activates it by putting on the Helmet of Shadows, and the clock counts down to the final battle between good and evil. In the episode The Last Voyage he tells Garmadon that a they will make a evil weapon, which, in episode The Last Hope, is revealed to be Garmatron. In the episode Return of the Overlord, the Overlord betrays and posesses Garmadon's body, which starts a metamorphosis that turned Garmadon into a human-dragon hybrid. Garmadon may not be the Dark Lord, as the Overlord seems to have the powers to fight Lloyd in the Final Battle. In the end, the Overlord turns into a dragon and gets defeated by Lloyd, turning Lord Garmadon good again and saving Ninjago.
