Background
Wu was a young boy living at the monastery his father and his brother Garmadon, who was his best friend. During one of their duels, Garmadon disarmed Wu's katana and accidentally flung it over the monastery walls, since their father would be upset about it, Garmadon asked for Wu to go and retrieve the sword, only for Wu to refuse and get chided by Garmadon for it, saying to Wu "Never put off for tomorrow, what could be done today." before hopping the wall to get back his brothers sword for him. Only for Garmadon to get bitten by The Great Devourer and infect him with its evil. Sensei Wu years later managed to defeat the self-appointed Lord Garmadon in a battle over the four golden weapons of Spinjitzu. After defeating his brother, Sensei Wu hid each of the weapons and had a dragon of the corresponding element guard each one.
He then created a map and gave it to Kai's father to safe guard for him in case he died before the weapons required collecting. He can be harsh on his students but when it comes down to it Sensei Wu is just about the bravest warrior there is. He was defeated by Samukai who thus collected all four golden weapons creating a portal in Lord Garmadon's throne room. Garmadon escaped through the portal claiming that he would soon return. In the Episode Tick Tock, Wu goes into a portal for his brothers assistance in fighting the Serpentine and saving Lloyd Garmadon.

Sensei Wu
Weapon of choice: Wisdom (and Staff)
Elemental color: All (balanced)
Strength: Power of Creation
Sensei Wu is a wise, old Spinjitzu Master. How old is he? Only his brother, the evil Lord Garmadon knows, and I'm not gonna ask him.
Their father created Ninjago, and to help protect it, Wu is training four young ninjas in Spinjitzu. He is very strong… sometimes he strikes with his staff, other times, he uses his wisdom.
Notes
- He is voiced by Paul Dobson, who did the voice for Whenua in the second and third BIONICLE movies. He later voiced Rattla and Falcon in season two of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
- Sensei Wu's black robes have symbols that protect him from evil. They aided him in defeating Lord Garmadon.
- An online variant of him is a white version of his black kimono.
- According the Ninjago official guide, he and Lord Garmadon fought, and defeated Samukai.
- When Sensei Wu says "Brother, Father would not want you to do this" in the episode "Weapons of Destiny" in Season 1 of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, his voice is much different than his true voice. It could be a different voice actor who voiced that line.
- When he was young, his hair was blond.
- He gains a new kimono in the 2012 wave, however, Wu keeps his old Kimono in the series and never gains a new one.
- Sensei Wu has a golden Spinjitzu tornado.
- Sensei Wu is usually very serious, but sometimes he says funny things, like when he said, "Maybe Jay can teach us the art of... (snicker snicker) KISSING PILLOWS!"
- When he was in the extra seat Nya and Jay Walker built on the Samurai Mech he spent most of the time drinking tea, that seat controls the arms and the platform on his feet can hover as shown in Rise of the Great Devourer.
- He loves Ferris wheels.
- In the TV series, he is shown to have the ability to project shadows, much like Lord Garmadon.
