7019 Viking Fortress against the Fafnir Dragon is a Vikings themed set released in 2005. It contains a large wooden fortification, a large and a small dragon, and six Viking Warriors, including the chief.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Viking fortress consists of an octagonal palisade with a huge gate at the front and a large dragon cage opposite to it. Atop of the cage is big rotatable catapult. On top of the palisade walls are two small towers with smaller catapults mounted on 4x4 turntables.
The gate is made of LEGO plates instead of dedicated gate pieces. The large catapult shoots metallic-coloured rocks.
The two dragons are custom models which don't appear elsewhere. They both have four legs and wings and largely consist of TECHNIC and BIONICLE pieces. The head piece of the bigger dragon only appeared in other sets of Vikings (also as dragon heads) and as an ornament in 8823 Mistlands Tower.
Background[edit | edit source]
Fafnir is a dwarf who kills his father so that he can attain gold and treasures given to him by Odin as atonement for Loki killing Fafnir's brother, Otter. Fafnir's greed transforms him into a dragon. Fafnir's other brother, Regin, wants the gold for himself and sends his foster-son Sigurd to kill Fafnir. With guidance from Regin and Odin, Sigurd is able to wound Fafnir while he is drinking from a stream. He bathes in the dragon's blood to gain invulnerability, which allows him to slay the monster. As he dies, Fafnir realizes that his death is the machination of Regin and warns Sigurd of his brother's treachery.
