Background[edit | edit source]
Terry McGinnis is a troubled teenager who discovers that in his younger days, Bruce Wayne was Batman. After his father is killed, Terry steals a batsuit to get his revenge on his father's boss, Derek Powers. Wayne tries to stop Terry, but Terry likens his need for vengeance to Bruce's. Terry becomes the new Batman with Wayne as his mentor. Soon, he compiles a new rogues gallery including villains such as Blight, Inque, and a gang called Jokerz who emulate the original Clown Prince of Crime. He also faces a few of his mentor's enemies, such as Mr. Freeze, Ra's Al Ghul, Bane, and The Joker.
Terry is eventually recruited into the Justice League Unlimited by Superman where he joins ranks with Big Barda, Mr. Miracle, Static and other legacy heroes, including Aquagirl, Kai-Ro, Warhawk, a new Flash, and Micron (respectively, the successors of Aquaman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl and John Stewart, The Flash, and The Atom).
Later in his life, Terry learns that he is Bruce Wayne's biological son and that his father's reproductive system was overridden by Amanda Waller to transmit Bruce's DNA. She plotted to kill the McGinneses while Terry watched and turn him into a new Batman, believing that the world would always need one, but the hired assassin did not agree with Waller's logic. The plan was called off, but fate still turned Terry into Batman. Terry ultimately reconciled with Bruce after their fallout in the Batcave and continued to protect Neo-Gotham as Batman.
