Brickipedia News:LEGO Ideas Announces Two Approved Sets

LEGO Ideas have announced two sets which they have approved for sale after receiving enough support. Peter Espersen, head of the co-creation at the LEGO Group, posted a video recapping the ideas that hit 10,000 supporters and naming the winners. So, the new sets will be...found here.

I know, that was anti-climactic. It was mostly because I could not embed the video. But in case you cannot watch the video, the new sets will be the Birds project and Big Bang Theory. What do you think of these picks? Did you want something else to win (cough, like say, one of the Doctor Who ideas? cough) or are you excited to see these two in LEGO form? Let us know what you think below!

Thanks go out to me for finding the video, me for being on Facebook at the time, and me for posting about it. Oh, and I guess NovaHawk and ToaMeiko for fixing my errors. They're pretty cool too.

Glad to say I supported the Big Bang theory. Keep in mind, we still might get Dr. who (though I hate the idea of it), as towards the end of the video the guy said they were still looking into producing it, which means it's much like the protal idea from last year; it was approved, but they're still looking into lisencing.

Never expected to see the Big Bang Theory project pass, happy to see it did though :)

A couple of years ago I would have been concerned about it due to the content of the show, but then they released sets from The Simpsons, so I don't care anymore. And honestly, I believe Ideas is probably the one suitable place for sets to be released which are geared towards older audiences anyway.

The fact that they are still considered one of the two Doctor Who projects to pass the review makes me sad. If they rejected them both outright, that could have meant that they picked up the Doctor Who construction license and were planning to start a full-on theme with it :( Even though Doctor Who's been a complete waste of time this season, I still would've liked LEGO sets.

So, just to clarify, we're getting a set based on the prevailing cosmological model for the early development of the universe and not the American sitcom... right?

Another thing, what do we think of the next wave of reviews? I am clinging to that Malevolence being made, but wouldn't be disappointed with a few of the others. I thought that was exciting news as well.

Birds are hardly boring, they look incredibly well built to me. They will be a perfect display piece, but nothing for play. The Big Bang Theory model will be cut down I'm sure, but it still looks interesting. New minifigure pieces are always a good thing!

My guesses:

  • Assault on Wayne Manor, Invisible Hand, X-Men: X-Mansion, UCS All Terrain Armoured Transport - I can't see these getting through at all. LEGO have existing licenses with these, and they can realistically make these themselves if they ever decide to, and do it under their respective themes and not Ideas.
  • LEGO Lightsabers: Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker - This one's obviously under Star Wars, but it's far from a typical Star Wars set, so I think there's a possibility it'll go through. Personally I really hope it does.
  • WALL•E - I would be shocked if this doesn't pass. It's Disney (and LEGO has over 10 licenses with Disney), it's well designed and looks great, it's easily recognisable, and it's made by someone who worked on the film itself.
  • Ghostbusters HQ - Doubt it. Like BTTF, I can't see more than one Ghostbusters set getting through. In both series, the car's sort of the most iconic part of the movies, and they've covered all the major characters in the one set, there's no need for anything more.
  • THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE - Probably pass. Real-world, well known space stuff tends to pass.

I think Wall-e is different enough from the Toy Story and Brave sets to sell better. The Toy Story sets didn't have too much recognizable to offer with the exception of the minifigures and maybe a couple of vehicles, and the Brave set was aimed at a smaller audience (by going through the Disney Princess line) and was really also pretty bare. Wall-e as a brick-built model not only is an interesting design, but represents the film well and is very recognizable. Still an interesting point you raise, but I'm hoping that time will disprove it. :P

umm... you're joking right? I know kids that watch it, and the language is about the same level as the Simpsons. At least BBT's sometimes funny (waits for CJC to slap me over the head for insulting the Simpsons)

I don't think the language is the same level as The Simpsons, Simpsons don't use bad language from what I know. I mean in BBT they say the r*p* word :S

The concern that people like me have with The Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons in LEGO isn't so much the language. Pretty much all of LEGO's licenses have that. It's the subject matter itself. Yes, there is some pretty gruesome stuff in Star Wars, DC, and Marvel, but you can boil it down to a colorful battle between good and evil. When you bring TBBT to its core, its a show about the, to keep it family friendly, love life of nerds. The Simpsons is a little better, I think, but it does still focus on the family of a lazy alcoholic and his ne'er-do-well son, and something about making toys for that seems sick to me.

Just my two cents, which is probably worth even less with inflation and the exchange rate and such.
