- This article is about the theme. For the video game, see LEGO Dimensions.
Dimensions is a theme introduced in September 2015. It includes products which are compatible with LEGO Dimensions. Although it was originally scheduled to run until at least 2018, the final wave of Dimensions sets was released in 2017 and the theme was discontinued.
After a mysterious vortex appears in several LEGO worlds, characters from worlds including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings and The LEGO Movie are swept away. In an attempt to save their friends, Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle jump into the vortex, but quickly find themselves fighting to save the entire multiverse of minifigures. Along the way, several alliances are forged, and they undertake a quest to defeat the evil Lord Vortech.
LEGO Dimensions is a toys to life game; a type of video game which was previously popularized by Skylanders and Disney Infinity. Each minifigure and vehicle comes with a removable base which can be read by a scanner (included with the Starter Pack) to bring the toy into the video game. As such, each set includes both real LEGO pieces and video game content. Rebuilding the vehicle with instructions from the game is encouraged.
The Dimensions product line is comprised of five types of packs. In the 2015-16 wave, there was a starter pack, fun packs, team packs, and level packs. The starter pack includes the game itself, a buildable portal which scans in minifigures and vehicles, three minifigures (Batman, Wyldstyle, and Gandalf), and one mini-vehicle (the Batmobile). Fun packs include one character and a mini-vehicle. Team packs include two characters and either two mini-vehicles or one mini-vehicle and an accessory of some sort. Level packs include one character, a mini-vehicle, and an accessory. In all cases, all the mini-vehicles can be rebuilt using the same parts into three different models, and the model in game will also change to similarly reflect the change. During the 2016-17 wave, story packs were introduced, comprised of one character, a mini-vehicle, and an alternative build to the starter pack's portal build.
The interaction between the game and the physical bricks is based on toy tags, which are included in every set which the character and mini-vehicle can be placed on. Each character/minifigure that comes in Dimensions has an exclusive printed toy tag which is coded to that character ingame. On the other hand, the toy tag that comes with a mini-vehicle is not exclusive, but rather have to be assigned to that mini-vehicle in game for it to work.
The various packs cover a wide variety of themes. The 2015-16 wave utilized past themes, such as The LEGO Movie, DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons, Jurassic World, Scooby-Doo, Ninjago, Legends of Chima, and LEGO Ideas IPs, such as Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Doctor Who. New IPs introduced in this wave include The Wizard of Oz, Portal 2, and Midway Arcade. In the 2016-17 wave, returning and upcoming themes include Harry Potter, The LEGO Batman Movie, LEGO City Undercover, and Ghostbusters 2016. New IPs introduced in this wave are Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Teen Titans Go!, Adventure Time, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Goonies, Mission Impossible, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Beetlejuice, Gremlins, The A-Team, The Powerpuff Girls, and Knight Rider.

“When kids play with LEGO bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favourite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games,” said Jon Burton, Founder and Creative Director, TT Games. “Now for the first time in a videogame, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO Delorean in New Ninjago City – the creative play is endless.”
“Building on TT Games’ track record for exceptionally popular, engaging games, LEGO Dimensions expands our LEGO videogame franchise with a breakthrough, immersive interactive entertainment experience that will redefine the toys to life games category,” said Jeff Junge, Senior Vice President, LEGO Franchise and TT Games, Warner Bros. In addition to the three minifigure heroes used to start the experience, LEGO Dimensions will allow gamers to customize their experience with additional expansion packs. Highly collectible Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs will provide new buildable characters, vehicles, tools and gadgets, as well as compelling game content with new mission-based levels and unique in-game abilities. All expansion packs will feature well-known properties and provide gamers the opportunity to use everything interchangeably, anywhere throughout the game – with no limitations.
A small sample of packs available in 2015 include the Back to the Future Level Pack with a LEGO Marty McFly minifigure, a LEGO Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole minifigures, three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with LEGO Gollum, LEGO Gimli and LEGO Legolas minifigures, four The LEGO Movie Fun packs with Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters, and a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a LEGO Wicked Witch of the West minifigure.
