The Doctor is a Time Lord of the planet Gallifrey. He is the titular character of the long running television series Doctor Who. Various actors have portrayed the character throughout its half-century run. This change is explained through "regeneration," a biological function of the Doctor's race.
Background
The Doctor has an extensive history, having lived for thousands of years. He's traveled to many places and often assumes companions to assist him during these travels.
The Doctor travels in a Type 40 TARDIS, a machine that is larger on the inside and disguises its exterior as a Police Box due to a broken chameleon circuit. TARDIS is an acronym for "Time and Relative Dimension in Space."
It is likely that the Curator is a future incarnation of the Doctor. He's very similar in appearance to the 4th Doctor, albeit aged.
