The Master, currently known as Missy, is a Time Lord of the planet Gallifrey. He is a former friend and current enemy of the Doctor. Various actors (and one actress) have portrayed the character throughout Doctor Who's half-century run. This change is explained through "regeneration," a biological function of the Master's race.
Background
The Master was forced to look into the Untempered Schism as a child, where he first witnessed the raw power of time. Around then, drumming from the Last Great Time War was sent back and implanted in his head, driving him mad.
