- This article is about the Eddie Brock Venom. For other Venoms, see the disambiguation page.
Venom is the original alias of Edward "Eddie" Brock. He would later be known as Anti-Venom and eventually Toxin.
Background
Earth 616 (The Marvel Universe)
Initially, Eddie Brock was a successful journalist. Discovering that he had adrenal cancer and only a few months to live, Brock decided he needed to find something big to write about. He was later contacted by Emil Gregg, who claimed to be the serial killer known as Sin-Eater. Brock wrote a front page article on Sin-Eater, protecting Gregg's supposed identity under the first amendment. A crisis of conscience would later have him reveal Gregg as Sin-Eater.
The edition of the paper where Brock revealed Gregg's identity sold out almost immediately, but Spider-Man revealed Sin-Eater's true identity as Detective Stan Carter on the same day. Gregg was found to be Carter's delusional neighbor, making Brock a laughingstock among his fellow journalists. Fired from the Daily Globe, he was forced to write for a tabloid. His wife left him, his father disowned him and his future appeared to be over. Brock blamed all of these problems on Spider-Man.
Brock began an intense workout hoping to reduce stress, but the physical exertions only increased his violent obsession with Spider-Man. Though his body was honed to near-perfection, Brock's mind would become a vessel of hatred.
Some time after Eddie's life took these drastic changes, and overwhelmed by his shame and the knowledge of his impending death, he decided to commit suicide. He visited Our Lady of Saints Church to beg forgiveness from God for this mortal sin, unaware of a nearby struggle. Spider-Man was using the church's bells to take off his new symbiotic alien costume, as it was sensitive to sound.
The symbiote trickled down to Brock, drawn to his despair, adrenaline and hatred, on which it fed. The symbiote merged mentally and physically with Brock, whose hatred overwhelmed the compassion the alien had acquired from Spider-Man. The dominant thought on both of their minds was that of Spider-Man. Brock’s sheer hatred for the crime fighter twisted the symbiote’s feelings to a similar extent.
In effect, Brock’s emotions drove the symbiote insane, just as their bonding may have driven Brock over the edge. Brock soon discovered that the costume gave him all the powers of Spider-Man, and more. It also added bulk to his already large frame and increased his strength and durability to superhuman levels. Calling himself "Venom," Brock directed the costume to sprout a hideous grin and plotted his revenge. Through the costume, Venom learned a great deal about Spider-Man, including his secret identity.
From there on out, Venom would become a common enemy of Spider-Man. Venom gained a twisted sense of morality, only killing when necessary and protecting the innocent. Because of this, he would eventually be forced to join Spider-Man to stop the symbiote's spawn, Carnage, who had merged with the serial killer Cletus Kasady. This would be the first of many uneasy alliances, despite Brock's consuming hatred. He would not be at a full truce until Spider-Man saved his ex-wife, who convinced him that Spider-Man could save more innocent lives with his powers.
Years later, Carnage gave birth to another symbiote. Disgusted by the birthing process and fearing that he would be threatened by its existence, Carnage attempted to kill it. Venom, however, wished to train it as an ally and partner. Weakened by the birthing, Carnage was unable to kill his spawn. The new symbiote would return, having bonded with Patrick Mulligan, a New York City cop. Venom named the symbiote after himself, calling it Toxin.
After an extended period of inactivity as Venom, Brock resurfaced with cancer. The only thing keeping him alive was the symbiote, but it did not want him anymore. After seeing a spiritual movie, Brock sold the symbiote in an auction, swearing off his life of vigilantism. After separating himself from the symbiote, he began to succumb to his cancer and experienced hallucinations of the symbiote. Because of this, he attempted suicide, but was discovered before he died. Hospitalized, he saw Mary Jane watching over Peter Parker's Aunt May. His dark tendencies caused him to order a black suit similar to Spider-Man's and he decided to murder Aunt May. Killing a nurse on the way to do so, he realized he could never kill someone so innocent. He was then found by Peter sitting on the frame of a shattered window, having slit his wrists dozens of times. He then jumped out of the window, but Peter caught him and broke the fall. Eddie then found himself chained to his bed, where he decided to take better control of himself for the remaining days of his life.
After selling the original Venom Symbiote at an auction and reforming his life, Eddie started to work at the F.E.A.S.T. center for Aunt May and Martin Li where he served food to the homeless. Thanks to Li's mysterious powers, he was cured of his cancer and the remnants of the symbiote. Unfortunately, the current Venom entered the F.E.A.S.T. center looking for Spider-Man. The symbiote saw Eddie and began to crawl onto him again, but Li's powers conflicted with it and created Anti-Venom.
Earth 1610 (The Ultimate Universe)
Earth 1610's Venom symbiote was developed by Eddie Brock Sr. and Richard Parker as a means to cure humanity's diseases and illnesses. During a trial run on a plane, Eddie killed everyone on board, including himself and Richard. Years later, Peter Parker, now Spider-Man, would be reunited with his childhood friend Eddie Brock Jr. after having found his father's tapes on the 'Venom Project'. Peter found a sample of the suit and accidentally spilled it on himself, which created his black costume. Sometime afterward, he lost control of it and decided that it was best to destroy all that was in his flask. He then revealed his identity to Eddie, who decided to take another flask for himself, becoming Venom.
