LEGO City Undercover is a City Video Game released for the Nintendo Wii U on March 18, 2013 in the US and March 28, 2013 in Europe. On November 22, 2016, it was announced that LEGO City Undercover would be released on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam in Spring 2017.[1]
Background[edit | edit source]
Throughout the mid-2000s, TT Games had been interested in making both an open world LEGO game and a game based on the LEGO City theme, however, they never had the time due to their work on other licensed projects. In 2010, shortly after the release of LEGO Rock Band, the project was handed to their subsidiary, TT Fusion, who decided to combine both ideas into a open world LEGO City game, with initial prototyping starting later that year. Around this time, Nintendo reached out to TT Games about developing an exclusive title for their upcoming system, the Wii U. Liking the specs of the system and already having a good relationship with the company, TT Games accepted the deal and decided to make the LEGO City project the exclusive game.
The game was first revealed at E3 in June 2011, under the title LEGO City Stories for both the Wii U and 3DS.[2] A year later, at E3 2012, the game was re-revealed with the new name LEGO City Undercover, with the additional news that the 3DS version had been changed into a standalone side game.[3] While initially given a release window of the 2012 holiday season, it was announced in a Nintendo Direct in September that the game had been delayed to early 2013.[4][5] Additionally, In January 2013, the 3DS version was revealed as a prequel titled LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins.[6]
LEGO City Undercover was released on March 18, 2013 in the US, March 28, 2013 in Europe and July 25, 2013 in Japan.
Story[edit | edit source]
Chase McCain comes back to LEGO City after accidentally revealing Natalia Kowalski’s identity live on national TV after Natalia provided evidence that helped arrest Rex Fury. Chase was brought back by ship by Mayor Gleeson to investigate a crime wave she believes Rex Fury is behind, as he is a criminal mastermind and had escaped from Albatross prison. Chase is brought to the police station, where he meets Frank Honey and an apparent old foe, Marion Dunby, who becomes the chief. After a briefing, Chase takes care of a bank robbery carried out by the clown robbers. After the mission, Chase bumps into Natalia Kowalski, who reveals that she had to change her identity to hide from Rex Fury and threatens to leave him for her personal safety. Later, Chase takes on a gang of robbers on the TV tower, and finds out from the leader that they were working from Rex Fury. Chase decides to go to Albatross Prison to find evidence of Rex, where he meets Blue Whittaker, who tells him about Rex. After investigating his cell, Chase discovers that Rex used a hammer to dig his way out of prison, leading to an assignment in the Bluebell Mine to find more evidence, but instead finds Rex, who knocks him out and escapes. Seeking for guidance to defend against Rex, Chase goes to Barry Smith, who teaches him Kung-Fu by listening to a disc. Chase decides to work undercover with Rex's affiliates, starting with Chan Chuang, a person who owns a chop shop, and works for him by stealing cars for him. He then goes on to work for Vinnie Pappalardo, who assigns him to steal the Bell Pepper Emerald. Dunby then tells chase to get evidence against Chan Chuang by photographing his gang doing illegal actions. Chan calls Chase sortly after and tells him to steal a moon buggy since all his most trusted employees had been arrested. Then, Chase is called by chief Dunby to save Forrest Blackwell, who has been kidnapped by a gang of angry kidnappers. Vinnie Pappalardo then assigns Chase a task to steal a robot Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton for Rex Fury. After that, Chase decides to head towards the hotel where he heard that Rex Fury and Vinnie were meeting, and learns that Vinnie and Rex had a falling out. He teams up with Vinnie to go into Blackwell tower to find a hidden vault of gold, where Moe explains to him about an incident where Forrest planned to build an apartment with a mall in the Bluebell National Park, but was banned due to the park housing a rare squirrel, infuriating Forrest. When Chase gets to the Tower, when he opens the vault, he is ambushed by Sentinels, who serve as guards. He outruns them, but when he goes to Pappalardo's Ice Cream Parlor in meet up with Vinnie, he rescues him from Rex's goons, who had frozen him in a freezer in retaliation of Vinnie betraying him. He next goes to the drains of Rex's secret base to find Henrik Kowalski, Natalia's father, there he finds that Forrest Blackwell himself is behind the crime wave. Henrik reveals to him a plan made by Blackwell to make an empire on the moon, where Henrik was forced to help make a protective shield for the empire. Upon discovering that Blackwell Tower is actually the rocket that Forrest was planning on using to get to the moon, he sets up force-fields around the tower to prevent the rocket's ignition from incinerating the city. Next, using another rocket, he goes to the moon empire and reroutes Forrest's rocket back to Earth, where Forrest then refuses to go, still furious about the incident of his cancelled construction project on Bluebell National Park. After fighting Rex Fury's T. Rex. Blackwell accidentally destroys the rocket, and leaves Rex and Chase to fight while he escapes in the command module. Chase then defeats Rex, but Blackwell escapes in an escape pod and vows his revenge. Chase continues and saves Natalia and some scientists in the command module and crash-lands to LEGO City. Chase is congratulated for saving the city and Rex is ultimately put back in prison.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- There are a many references to Games, TV shows, and Movies in LEGO City Undercover. Such as Mario, Shawshank Redemption, CSI: Miami, and many other Games, TV shows, and Movies.
- A Star from the Mario games can be seen as a balloon at a star-shaped balloon fair.
- Chase McCain uses a green warp pipe from the Mario games at one point.
- In the fight scene with Barry, when Chase McCain is hit with an uppercut, red letters that say K.O. appear and a classic Legend of Zelda fanfare is heard.
- Many famous cops and detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Watson were seen in the Police Station's Briefing Room.
- To unlock the Fisherman, you need to fish at Crescent Park Wharf, when you fish up the fish it is a Cheep-Cheep from the Mario games.
- To unlock Chan Chuang, you need to build a Bob-omb from the Mario games and throw it at a cage at the Pagoda.
- Horace Cone may be a parody of Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami.
- In an area in downtown, there are cannons that fire LEGO Bullet Bills from the Mario series.
- Above an Ivy covered tunnel, a LEGO Wiggler from the mario series is wandering back and forth.
- There are five buildable Super Stars from the Mario series, which unlock the Pop Star.
- There are five question mark blocks from the Mario series, which when all are hit, they unlock the Super Wrestler.
- There is a Red Brick that once activated, gives the player Mario's Hat.
- There is another Warp Pipe behind the dojo that can be watered, and reveals a Venus Fire Trap (Fire Brathing Pirahna Plant) from the Mario series. The fire from the Venus Fire Trap can be used to burn a large spider web blocking the character token, Barry Smith (Trouserless).
- In the Mueseum level, a giant dry bones from Mario can be built.
- Some Characters jump the same way Mario does.
- On one of the towers on the castle has a flag pole from the Mario series.
- This game is one of the few LEGO video games not to include a multiplayer function and is published by Nintendo.
- This game is the only LEGO game exclusive to Wii U, as the Wii U pad is specifically required for several of the game's unique features.
- People that worked on the game like Luke Cashmore and Ross Wilding have minifigures you can unlock.
- This game features all minifigures Series 1 and Series 3 from Minifigures Theme and all minifigures from Series 2, Series 4, Series 5, and Series 6, but not Witch, Kimono Girl, Lawn Gnome, Egyptian Queen, Evil Dwarf, Small Clown, Flamenco Dancer, Genie, Lady Liberty and Leprechaun. However the Lady Liberty made an appearance in this game as a statue, but without a fire element in her torch.
- When adding the Zombie minifigure, a coding error caused all the NPCs to spawn as zombies. The developers ended up really liking the idea and considered adding it as a possible unlockable feature, however LEGO decided against it, citing concerns that while having one zombie character was fine, a city full of zombies could scare children.[7]
- The poster with Chase McCain and Rex Fury may be referring to the special assignment when Chase goes to the mine and is ambushed by Rex's goons and dynamite.
- Before this game released, some of the minifigures from the game are made in physical forms such as Officer Park, Ranger Barber and Rod Stanchion.
- It is unknown what happend to many characters, such as Clarence Fletcher and Chan Chuang.
- Some of the districts in this game was named after the real-life places and Historical Landmarks in the United States.
- The 100% completion bonus was inspired by a coding error where a minifigure model was made five times bigger then normal by mistake.[7]
- LEGO City Undercover was the first LEGO game released for both the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch.
- LEGO City Undercover (under its original name LEGO City Stories) was the first game ever publicly revealed for the Wii U.
- Several side missions such as such as towing vehicles, driving a taxi to escort people from place to place for extra studs and driving a firetruck around, were considered but ultimately scrapped.
- Two picture books based on the game were released in 2013 as part of the LEGO City line of books, titled LEGO City: Detective Chase McCain: Stop That Heist! and LEGO City: Detective Chase McCain: Save That Cargo!.
- Due to the failure of the Wii U, many developers who worked on the game didn't get the chance to play it until the 2017 remaster, as it was an exclusive for several years and many people at TT Fusion didn't own the system during it's lifespan.
- Unbeknownst to most people, Segway is a brand name owned by Segway Inc. For its inclusion, TT Fusion had to get approval from the company’s CEO to use the name.
- Technically the vehicle isn't actually a Segway since it has six wheels instead of two.
- In December 2020, Nintendo's publishing license expired, and both the original Wii U version of City Undercover and The Chase Begins were delisted from the Wii U and 3DS eShops.[8]
- The game is still available on the Nintendo Switch, as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published that the remaster instead of Nintendo.
- The polybag that the Chase McCain pre-order figure was released in has the wrong hair color on the packaging.
- Multiplayer was considered for the Wii U version but was deemed impossible do the heavy use of the Gamepad.
- Due to this, Lego City Undercover is the only home console LEGO game developed by either TT Games or TT Fusion to not include multiplayer (until the remaster).

Press Statement[edit | edit source]
This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. (visit this item's product page)
The Chase is On!
For the first time, the fan-favorite LEGO City vehicles and play sets come to life in LEGO City Undercover, exclusively for the new Wii U console. Players assume the identity of Chase McCain, an undercover detective armed with clever disguises. The mission is to put a stop to the fiendish Rex Fury and end his crime wave in LEGO City. As players run, drive and even fly through the city, they’ll use the Wii U controller as a new police gadget.
Features
The Wii U controller is woven seamlessly into the gameplay experience. Players use it to scan for hidden clues and criminals, receive mission updates and place waypoints on an overhead city map that displays their position in real time.
Experience LEGO City like never before. Encounter familiar play sets come to life as players explore the vast city, looking for clues to bring Rex Fury to justice.
Players can go undercover with a variety of disguises including a firefighter, a construction worker and even a robber and use their unique abilities to solve puzzles and access new areas of the city. Once you've earned these disguises you'll definitely want to take a break from the story to enjoy some good old fashioned 'off the clock' fun. As Doyle explains, you can't be a good cop all the time: "There's so much more outside of the story. As a robber you can steal cars and try to outrun the police, take part in vehicle and free-running time trials, be a limousine driver, catch renegade aliens, rescue cats, put out fires... the list goes on and on."
There are more than 100 vehicles for players to collect and use to explore the city, including sports cars, motorcycles and even aircraft.
Players can expect talking minifigures and parody to deliver the game’s storyline.
Minifigure Included with Preorder[edit | edit source]
Version Differences[edit | edit source]
Remaster[edit | edit source]
- Instead of a Chase McCain minifigure like the original Wii U version, GameStop offered a police helicopter minibuild as an exclusive pre-order bonus instead.[9]
- Due to the lack of a second screen with the Wii U GamePad, the police communicator appears on the main screen when needed, with players using controller inputs to move it instead of physically moving the GamePad.
- The D-pad is used for actions such as answering video calls, taking pictures and performing audio scans instead of pressing buttons on the gamepad.
- The Mario references and easter eggs were included exclusively in the Nintendo Switch version except for the Mario Hat red brick which was removed in order to keep the red brick count consistent across all systems. The red brick was replaced with a new unlockable helicopter called Guardian.
- The only Nintendo easter egg kept in the other releases of the remaster was the word "Epona" on some of the bus license plates, a reference to Link's horse from the Legend of Zelda series.
- Chase's outfit has been changed to be entirely dark blue.
- The parts for his original outfit can be equipped in the character customizer in the police station.
- Multiplayer co-op was added, allowing a second player to control a second Chase McCain.
- Chase's player two outfit is his design from LEGO Dimensions.
- The taxi's checkered stripes were replaced with plain black stripes.
- Red Bricks are automatically unlocked after being collected instead of having to be purchased at the police station.
- The loading times are slightly shorter with loading screens now featuring miniature 3D models of in-game locations instead of just the spinning police badge.
- Character and vehicle tokens are hexagons instead of circles.
- Character and vehicle tokens can be purchased directly from call-In points and disguise booths instead of only at the police station.
- Two bonus missions previous unlocked with a cheat code included in a tie-in set are now automatically unlocked upon completing the main story mode.
- The green filter present in the Wii U version was removed, making cutscenes and gameplay visually look better.
- Players can no longer rewatch the game's cutscenes from the projector room in the police stations third floor. The only way to do so in-game is to replay the game's missions or start a new save file
