LEGO Creator is a video game released for PC in 1999. The game is a sandbox, allowing players to build whatever they want with the provided pieces and structures.

Development[edit | edit source]

Following the success of Lego Island, The LEGO Group was still cautious about entering the gaming market, believing it could hurt or even overtake their toy sales. Around this time, the company formed their own publishing division, LEGO Media International, whose goal was to work with outside developers and further explore ideas for LEGO games. The first three titles developed under this initiative were Lego Creator by Superscape, Lego Chess by Krisalis Software, and Lego Loco by Intelligent Games, all released on November 11, 1998.[1]

Features[edit | edit source]

The game lets players create several different models, along with vehicles and a city. In addition to the regular bricks in an assortment of colors, there are specified "Action Bricks" that move or make noise. Such examples include a Hinge, Propeller, and Siren. There is also a "Destructa Brick." This can be used to destroy models in Play Mode, although they will automatically rebuild when returning to Build Mode. Minifigures can also be used and can stand, sit (for controlling vehicles), or walk. They, too, are customizable. They can even be set to drive vehicles set to a path or road. In play mode, environments can go from day to night.

Windows XP/Vista compatibility[edit | edit source]

Older versions of LEGO Creator don't work in unmodified versions of Windows XP. When installed from an original game disc, overwritten with a third-party patch and run in Windows 98/Me compatibility mode, the game will play on some Windows XP computers. A rerelease of the game added support for XP, and LEGO also released a patch that allows it to run on Windows NT-based operating systems, such as Windows 2000, XP or Vista. LEGO creator is compatible with Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows Vista Business.

Awards[edit | edit source]

LEGO Creator received 4 awards:

  • Computer Game Developers Spotlight Award, Best New Children's Game
  • CODIE Software Publishers Association Excellence in Software Awards, Best New Home Creativity Software (US)
  • "Top 100 Family Tested," Family PC Magazine
  • PIN Quality Mark Gold Award, Parents Information

Sequels[edit | edit source]

LEGO Creator was followed by three sequels: LEGO Creator: Knight's' Kingdom in 2000, LEGO Creator: Harry Potter in 2001, and LEGO Creator: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002, all developed by Superscape.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • An intro cutscene was produced for the game but wasn't included, reportedly because it wasn't finished in time for release.[2]
