5702 LEGO Chess is a LEGO video game that was released for PC in 1998. The game is a Lego-themed version of chess, with minifigures in place of the usual chess pieces.

Development[edit | edit source]

Following the success of Lego Island, The LEGO Group was still cautious about entering the gaming market, believing it could hurt or even overtake their toy sales. Around this time, the company formed their own publishing division, LEGO Media International, whose goal was to work with outside developers and further explore ideas for LEGO games. The first three titles developed under this initiative were Lego Creator by Superscape, Lego Chess by Krisalis Software, and Lego Loco by Intelligent Games, all released on November 11, 1998.[1]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Lego Chess is a Lego-themed version of chess. Lego minifigures are used instead of regular pieces and when "pieces" are captured, an animation will play showing the pieces attacking each other. The game also features different gameplay options to change the chess rules.

Story Mode[edit | edit source]

In story mode, players choose either the western or pirate theme and play three rounds of chess against an AI opponent, with the opponent increasing in difficulty each round. Each theme includes an intro cutscene and beating all three difficulty levels will award the player with a certificate that can be printed out.

Tutorial Mode[edit | edit source]

The tutorial mode is a tutorial teaching players how to play chess. The game is taught by the Chess King, who commands an army of white pieces on the board.

Versus Mode[edit | edit source]

In Versus Mode, players are able to play against an AI opponent by choosing their desired difficulty, watch AI opponents play against each other, or play multiplayer with another person, each taking turns on the board. Versus Mode also allows the option to have both the Pirates and Western themes against each other; however, this disables the animations.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • The Castle theme was planned to be included in the game but was cut due to time constraints.[2]
    • Some concept art suggests that the Adventurers theme was also planned.[3]
