LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins is a City Video Game released on the Nintendo 3DS on April 21, 2013, and April 26, 2013 in Europe. The game is a prequel, taking place two years before LEGO City Undercover (in 2008), and follows the adventures of Chase McCain as a rookie cop.

Background[edit | edit source]

Throughout the mid-2000s, TT Games had been interested in making both an open-world LEGO game and a game based on the LEGO City theme; however, they never had the time due to their work on other licensed projects. In 2010, shortly after the release of LEGO Rock Band, the project was handed to their subsidiary, TT Fusion, who decided to combine both ideas into an open-world LEGO City game, with initial prototyping starting later that year. Around this time, Nintendo reached out to TT Games about developing an exclusive title for their upcoming system, the Wii U. Liking the specs of the system and already having a good relationship with the company, TT Games accepted the deal and decided to make the LEGO City project the exclusive game.

Originally, at E3 2011, Nintendo announced that LEGO City Undercover (under the tentative title Lego City Stories) would release on both the Wii U and 3DS; however, at E3 2012, it was announced that the 3DS version had changed to instead be a separate side game.[1][2] In January 2013, the 3DS version was announced as Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins, and it would be a prequel taking place two years before LEGO City Undercover.[3]

Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins was released on April 21, 2013 in the US; April 26, 2013 in Europe; and April 27, 2013 in Australia.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Some civilians use Harry Potter's torso.
  • Most vehicles from LEGO City Undercover reappear.
  • In the fire station, all firefighters wear forest fire suits and Chase McCain wears the normal black version. However, in LEGO City Undercover, itt's the other way round.
  • Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins is the only LEGO game on the 3DS that didn't receive a DS version.
  • In December 2020, Nintendo's publishing license expired, and both the original Wii U version of City Undercover and The Chase Begins were delisted from the Wii U and 3DS eShops.[4]
    • The game is still available on the Nintendo Switch, as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published the remaster instead of Nintendo.
