Part 7049 is a 2 X 4 brick that has axle holes on all four sides for wheels. It was used with the first LEGO wheels, parts 751 and 7039. Starting in 1970, the white version of this brick was phased out in favour of the black version.

It was used until the early 1990s, in 1980 part 4180 was introduced - it only had two holes to attach wheels, as opposed to four on part 7049.
