This was the first Super Heroes set I planned to not buy since the release of the theme in 2012. But then I saw how cheap it was, and I thought I may as well.
The Box[edit | edit source]
I don't usually care much about the box, but this one got my attention, because of some of the details on it-
- The top, instead of featuring a minifigure at 1:1 scale as usual, randomly features a wheel
- The advertising for how easy Juniors is on the back doesn't really make sense to me-
- Pre-packed bags - don't all LEGO sets have pre-packed bags (or in this case, bag)
- Easy instructions - they're no easier than normal (you can't get much easier than normal LEGO instructions). Unless having a picture of a minifigure with a magnifying glass on every second page somehow helps. All he did was just confuse me, I still don't know what he's doing there.
- Quick start - ? I don't get what this means.
- I believe these details are on all Juniors boxes (at least something similar was on the box for the Juniors Batcave), so it's nothing weird about this specific set. Of course, none of this even really matters, it's all about the set itself.
The set[edit | edit source]
- Spider-Man's car
OK, so it doesn't look amazing, and most of the car is made up of one big red car shell piece. However, there's nothing particularly wrong with it, being this small, you can't get too much more detail. One really good thing about this set (and the Batcave as well) is that there are no stickers- the front piece with the spider on it and the headlights are all printed on. Presumable this is done so kids don't have to worry about messing stickers up (something I never do myself, only on nearly every set I build), but it would be nice to see this being done again on a wider range of sets, so the serious collectors out there can build detailed sets and don't have to worry about applying stickers (and having them degrade over time). All in all, there's nothing too special or interesting about the car except for the printed parts, but I don't dislike it. Also, I do think it looks better in real life than it does on the box.
- Venom's wall
It's as simple as it looks. Basically a few 2 x 4 bricks stacked onto a platform, and some bricks to attach the web to. Again, nothing special or anything to talk about, but with the web to tie Venom up in, it's not a bad play feature.
The minifigures[edit | edit source]
- Spider-Man
We've all seen him before, however this time he comes with a red hip joint instead of a blue one. While probably not accurate to the comic books or movies, it does help to break up the blue a bit more, and being more a fan of the 2002-2007 Spider-Man trilogy than the more recent depictions of him, I'm happy to see more red on his suit.
- Venom
Venom's the same as the one we've seen before, except with only one smaller bomb and no tentacles attached to his back. He still looks great, I think like Spider-Man, he'd appeal to little kids as a minifigure, and it's a nice cheap way to pick him up if you don't already have him.
Overall[edit | edit source]
If you don't already have Venom from 76004 and you even only slightly want him- get this set. I doubt there's a much cheaper way to get him, even buying him online opened and used wouldn't be much cheaper than getting this set, and you get a Spider-Man and about 50 other parts along with it. If you already have Venom, it's very likely you'll already have Spider-Man, so it's not really about the figures unless you just feel like getting another Venom. As I've said, there's nothing particulary special about the set- but I'm glad I got it. It's a nice quick build, I've got some small models to add to my Super Heroes collection, and I'd say it's definitely got good value for money.
