Review:5928 Bi-Wing Baron/LEGO JohnnyThunderFan
This is a great small set.
For a low price of (US)$6.00, you get a awesome plane, some accessories, a few special parts, and one minifigure.
The plane is black and gray, just like all of the villains' vehicles and equipment in the Egypt subtheme. This plane is mainly composed of a large bottom part that includes the cockpit, the two levels of wings (hence is it a bi-plane), mounted machine guns, engine with propeller, and tail fin. Even though the guns are mounted shotgun/rifle parts, they are supposed to be machine guns, as mentioned in the Adventurers comic in a 1998 issue of LEGO Mania Magazine, hence they automatically fired. The plane in its entirety is very detailed for such a small set. It has a small windshield, a spinnable propeller, mounted machine guns (as I said), fire/exhaust from the engine, gray spoked wheels, and a nice tail fin. While the plane's cockpit was not overly special, it did have hollow arm rests where you can store maps and other small items. The only strange part of the set is that the cockpit has no steering wheel or way of really controlling the plane, so you could either try and add one or use your imagination.
The minifigure that is included is the infamous Baron Von Barron, sometimes misspelled Baron Von Baron. He is also known as Mr. Hates and Evil Eye. In the later years, he has also used some other names and titles, including his (probably) real name, Sam Sanister. And since 'Sanister' sounds like 'Sinister', he is most commonly called Sam Sinister, Lord Sinister, or Lord Sam Sinister. He may have so many names and titles because he wants to stay unrecognized by the authorities, as he is one of the most wanted men in the LEGO world. Aside from his many names and titles that can get confusing if you think about it for more than a minute, let's get on to his actual characteristics and traits. Like I said, he is one of the most wanted men in the world, for quite a few reasons. He was formerly in the military, but was most likely kicked out and became evil. He is also a renowned tomb raider, treasure stealer, and even dinosaur poacher. Not only those things, but he is also involved with many other wanted villains; Slyboots, another treasure hunter and tomb raider; Senor Palomar and his gang of bandits who illegally steal and sell treasures all over the South American black market; Mr. Cunningham, a poacher and big game hunter; Alexia/Alexis Sanister/Sinister, Sam's own sister who is sort of like him; the Brickster (self-explanatory, I think); the false Maharaja Lallu and his men; Ngan Pa the ruthless and greedy Yeti hunter; the false Emperor Chang Wu and his guards; and some others. Basically, the Baron is one of the most interesting characters in the Adventurers theme. In this set, he has his normal Egypt apparel, which is composed of his gray lets, tan button up military-looking shirt, satchel bag with strap, black glove, hook hand, and white epaulettes; except instead of a white pith helmet, he wears his brown aviator helmet with black goggles. His face features a monocle over one of his eyes and nothing covering his other eye (hence one of his titles, Evil Eye), a moustache, an evil grin and a scar.
This set comes with a few cool items, too. It comes with 4 guns (which are mounted as machine guns on the plane), binoculars, and one of the four maps featured in the Egypt subtheme.
The plane can also be made into two other cool models; an engine-powered glider with some mounted guns and a tail fin, and a swamp boat with mounted guns, tires in the back, and a small cockpit with no doors.
I really love this set. To this day it is regarded as one of my favorite small vehicle sets. I still remember opening it, building it, playing with it for hours, then building the second model and playing with that, and finally the third model and playing with that. Even for a small set it still has a lot of playability, and I'd definitely recommend it.
