Follows the show a little, team Rocket shows up sometimes, instead of the Elite 4 you go to the Pokemon League and try to win, after Kanto you leave your Pokemon at Oak's lab (if you go to the lab you can see your Pokemon wandering around) and you get a new starter and its the same thing all over again. Now if your in Hoenn or somewhere after Kanto, you can go back to the past regions and you can use your old Pokemon and do after game stuff.
