The "Rookie" is a nickname given by Lex Luthor to the player's custom character in LEGO DC Super Villains. While the player is free to name the character as he or she wishes, characters in-game will refer to him or her as "Rookie" and use the pronouns "they" or "them".

Background[edit | edit source]

The Rookie is a refugee from Earth-3 where the Crime Syndicate, in some undisclosed episode, rendered them mute. After travelling to Prime-Earth, he or she was apprehended while trying to gain super powers from Professor Ivo and was locked-up at Stryker's Island. Commissioner Gordon travels to Metropolis to interrogate Lex Luthor, an old associate of Ivo, on the Rookie. Luthor, however, is sprung from the prison with help from Mercy Graves and invites the Rookie to come with them. While gaining Cheetah, Solomon Grundy, and Metallo in their breakout endeavour, the Rookie absorbs energy beneath Stryker's Island and fights the Justice League alongside the villains.

When the Crime Syndicate arrive on Prime-Earth posing as replacement heroes for the missing Justice League, the Rookie recognizes them and assists Luthor and the Legion of Doom in resisting them, all the while growing in power. After Luthor betrays the Legion to the Syndicate, the Rookie is transported alongside The Joker and Harley Quinn to Apokolips where they find the missing Justice League. Back on earth, Rookie and the other villains team-up with the Justice League in order to defeat the Crime Syndicate and, later, the forces of Darkseid the Syndicate was heralding.

Darkseid realizes that the anti-life equation he is searching for is inside of the Rookie, the reason for their power growth. When Deathstroke, Cyborg, and Robin are unable to protect the Rookie from being kidnapped by Steppenwolf and Batman and Catwoman fail to rescue him, Luthor spearheads a mission to retrieve him from Apokolips, taking Darkseid's treatment of "his" rookie personally. While Darkseid is successful in extracting the anti-life equation and prepares to takeover the universe, he is thwarted by the combined efforts of the League and Legion. With Darkseid out of the picture, Luthor intends to abandon both the heroes and villains on Apokolips, but the Rookie uses his telekinesis to ensure everyone gets back to earth. Once there, Superman and Wonder Woman ask the Rookie to join the Justice League, reminding him that Luthor betrayed him twice, while Luthor and Joker implore him to remain a villain and "have more fun."

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • LEGO DC Super Villains is the first game to integrate a custom character directly into the story.
