Allan Rasmussen, senior project manager for The LEGO Group, has announced that The LEGO Group is seeking a replacement for the ABS plastic found in most pieces we know. Their aim is to use a sustainable resin in their bricks by 2030 meaning that bricks will be cheaper to produce and more environmentally friendly, but the aim is that they will also blend seamlessly with the current ABS bricks and retain the same quality.

May the brick quality stay good.

As long as it keeps the same quality it has currently, and doesn't make me think any different about LEGO, I'm happy.

Even if the resin thing isn't perfect, we'll get used to it eventually.

I'd love for this to make prices cheaper, but I cannot see that happening :( LEGO bricks good for the environment (I'm guessing this is in the production proccess) is a good thing though.

If its the same quality, and it is at least 20% cheaper, I'm happy.

Sounds like good news as long as the quality is comparable. (But to be honest, I'd be okay with a slight decrease.)

I'm actually really looking forward to this. Since ABS is getting more and more expensive to produce since oil prices keep rising, hopefully the new material will be much cheaper for LEGO to manufacture, thus driving down the price of LEGO sets.

My biggest worry is if the quality will actually stay the same, and the look and feel of the bricks will be unchanged. We were told the quality of Chinese bricks would be the same, and that wasn't the case (well, now they're almost the same, but not in the beginning). For me, quality>cost>environmental issues. But if the bricks are all the same, then it's great news.

Which is why its in research right now, and they have dates set nearly two decades from now. They're looking to discover/engineer a resin that meets the same quality as ABS. If they were going to decrease the quality, they'd just use an already-available resin instead of going through the research and development to find a new resin.
