LEGO Tower is a spin-off of the Tiny Tower series released for iOS and Android on July 1, 2019. In the game, players manage a tower full of minifigures, adding floors to make it taller and attracting more minifigures to live and work wherever the player wants.

Background[edit | edit source]

Tiny Tower was first released for mobile devices by developer NimbleBit in 2011. Initially, the game wasn't very successful until several gaming outlets covered it and Apple awarded it iPhone Game of the Year. Over the following years, several spin-offs were released, such as Star Wars: Tiny Death Star in 2013, and Tiny Tower Vegas in 2014.

Tiny Death Star was delisted in October 2014, less than a year after release, with Disney stating they wanted to focus on other Star Wars games they considered higher priorities.[1] The decision reportedly disappointed NimbleBit, as the game had been a significant revenue source for the studio and they weren’t told about the discontinuation in advance.[1]

Development[edit | edit source]

LEGO Tower was inspired by a Flickr user who created digital 3D renders of Tiny Tower floors in LEGO. When LEGO approached NimbleBit about making a mobile game, the studio pitched several ideas for LEGO-themed versions of their existing games. LEGO chose the Tiny Tower concept, largely due to the Flickr renders that were included as examples in the pitch.[2] LEGO Tower was the first mobile game from The LEGO Group after they had reworked their mobile strategy. Instead of games based on specific set themes, they opted for a "product first approach" with titles based on LEGO as a whole that could stand on their own instead of acting as advertisements for their products. Additionally, the game was partly aimed at older LEGO fans as well as kids, as they found some Tiny Tower players were still playing the game almost eight years after its launch.[2]

LEGO Tower was announced in March 2019 with an estimated release window of Summer.[3] The game launched on July 1, 2019.[4]

In March 2025, an in-game update announced that LEGO Tower was set to shut down at an unspecified date during the summer, and players were awarded with free Tower Club and Lost and Found.[5] However, in June, another update informed players that the game would remain available for the foreseeable future.[6]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Unlike other mobile games, LEGO Tower doesn't use the traditional calendar system to track players' microtransaction subscriptions. Instead, it only tracks days players play the game for at least five minutes.
  • The VIP Pass used to offer an option for a year-long subscription, but it was replaced with the option to buy it permanently for $20.
  • Before the game's launch, LEGO Ideas held a contest challenging fans to design their own floor for a chance to have it included in the game. Out of nearly four hundred submissions, only six were selected.[7]
  • Another event was held in June 2019 at the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, that lasted three days. Visitors were able to build their own physical floor models out of provided bricks and at the end of the event, all the floors were connected into one tower.
    • The completed diorama broke the world record for the largest LEGO diorama, measuring 21.04 square meters (226 square feet), although this record has since been beaten.[8][9]
