Hello everyone! Brikkyy13 here, bringing you a very special BIONICLE 2015 Review! Firstly, thank you to The LEGO Group for kindly supplying this set to Brickipedia and to ToaMeiko for sending it out to me. Secondly, it's so good to finally have a new BIONICLE set. Now, on to the review!

The Box[edit | edit source]

As usual with BIONICLE sets, the packaging is amazing and differs from regular LEGO sets. This time around, it's a hexagonal shaped box.

Some people have been complaining that the cardboard used is a little flimsy, and that is true to an extent, it is a bit weak. The cardboard is the same type used for the new Speedorz sets, so make of that what you will.

The Build[edit | edit source]

Included in the box is one bag of parts and the instruction manual. Inside the cover of the manual is a comic strip

Sorry for the angle, but it is available online here. The set includes a few new (and awesome!) pieces.

These pieces are:

  • The Protector Mask of Ice
  • Skull Spider Mask/body
  • New head piece
  • New eyestalk piece
  • A Technic spacer
  • New clip-on armour
  • The new 6-stud shooter

Of all of these pieces the new shooter is the most exciting. The shooter is made up of 2 parts, the main grey gun and a yellow tube (that is virtually impossible to get out) that allows the shooter to work. Speaking of working, the gun works really well. If you're not careful, you will loose studs. The whole shooting mechanism is simple, and is much like the minifigure stud shooter that we got last year; The stud rests in a regular sized tube, then when the yellow thingy is turned a ridge pops off a stud and sends it flying.

The build in general is fairly simple, but is still more complex than the average Hero Factory set (we won't might miss you HF). All in all, nothing special there.

The Set[edit | edit source]

Included in the set is two figures, the Protector of Ice and a gun-metal grey Skull Spider. The Skull Spider uses 5 of the sets pieces, yet is still an excellent figure.

It's simple yet looks very menacing. Though it doesn't seem like a match for the protector, we know from the new mobile game that the Skull Spiders can be VERY deadly.

I just want to say, that for 5 pieces, the Skull Spiders have incredible posability and have pretty good value. It's great that LEGO included one in every set.

Now for the main part of the set, the Protector of Ice!

The figure is very nice, incredibly detailed and looks great from all angles. Also, posability. Like all CCBS builds, the posability is amazing, you can put the figure in any pose and it'll look great. On the subject of CCBS, it fits perfectly in the world of BIONICLE. Finally, the figures can have the smooth look of organic matter with the robot look of bio-mechanical beings.

The figure is simply amazing. I don't have any complaints on the look or build, but I do want to point out that the figure does not have lower arms and some people may find that off-putting. However, that does not hinder the posability, which is a bit of a miracle because the weapons are kind of oversized.

R70782b1312.jpeg

The weapons, though a bit oversized, are pretty cool. The first weapon is that shooter that I showed off earlier, that has an elemental ice blade-thingy attached to the top. The second weapon is a ice saw blade (that actually spins!) that reminds me a lot of Kopaka's shield back from '01.

Now a LEGO set wouldn't be a LEGO set without some kind of Play Feature. This one's feature (other than the wicked shooter) is the new head. The eyestalk sticks out the back of the head like a minifig among microfigs, and that's for a reason. If you push down on the trigger, the mask pops off.

R70782b1313.jpeg

This feature works really well, and is incredibly sturdy. The mask won't come off unless you push that trigger or pull it off, which is really good if you're using the set quite a bit. The mask attaches to the head the same way visors attach to minifigure helmets, which is pretty ingenious in my opinion. But why would you want to pop off a mask? Well, the story dictates that you pop off the mask so the Skull Spider can climb on and posses the character.

Now that looks pretty cool. One minute there's your good guy hero and the next there's your villain-for-hire baddie. It really adds to what LEGO likes to call "conflict in the box," which is simply "Bad guy included."

Final Thoughts[edit | edit source]

All in all, it's an amazing set, packed with value. You get an awesome figure and a great Skull Spider, not to mention it's under the name BIONICLE! Finally! After 5 long years we have our precious BIONICLE back!

I don't have many complaints for this set, except for the fact that the mask doesn't cover the entire face. I would have preferred if the head was fully covered, but it still looks awesome the way it is.

I definitely recommend getting this set if you like BIONICLE, Hero Factory or just an excellent, good value set. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.
