Shana (シャナ) is a Flame Haze known as the "Flame-Haired Red-Hot-Eyed Hunter" (「炎髪灼眼の討ち手」, "Enpatsu Shakugan no Uchite"), who hunts the Denizens and contracted with Alastor, who calls her "The Great One". Her mentor and guardian is Wilhelmina Carmel. She generally treats most people with ignorance and indifference, with the exception of Chigusa Sakai, to whom she looks as a source of answers when Alastor or Wilhelmina cannot. At first, she focuses solely on her duty as a Flame Haze and is indifferent towards humans, choosing not to have a name until Yuji names her Shana after her weapon, a nodachi called the Nietono no Shana (贄殿遮那, "Vairocana of the Offering Room"), and seeing him only as a Torch notable for his status as a Mystes. Despite her harsh attitude towards Yuji, she genuinely cares for him as she slowly opens up to him and comes to see him as a person, eventually falling in love with him while competing with Kazumi Yoshida for his love. Shana is said to be the most powerful Flame Haze, who most Denizens known and fear. She has various abilities, including proficiency with the Nietono no Shana, psychic abilities, wielding flames and the Power of Existence, and flying with wings of flame. After the final battle, Yuji accepts Shana's feelings and asks her to be with him in Xanadu, which she accepts.
Martha Lorraine[11] (voiced by Tabitha St. Germain) is the titular protagonist. Martha is a talking Labrador mix that was born an energetic stray and was put in the dog pound as a puppy. She gained the ability to talk after Helen gave her a bowl of alphabet soup; the letters in the soup went to her brain instead of her stomach. In order to retain this ability, Martha has to continue to eat the soup.[12] She is also capable of speaking different languages if the soup she eats is from another country but can only speak one language at a time (e.g., if she were to eat a can of soup from Poland, she'd only be able to speak Polish until she was fed another can). Though, the phenomenon couldn't be repeated with another dog. She was based on a dog owned by Susan Meddaugh, which in turn could be named after the dog in subject of The Beatles song "Martha My Dear". Martha woke up in the morning singing in "Martha Sings".[13] She can understand most animal languages except for a few exotic animals such as monkeys and giraffes. These languages are difficult, as slight elongation or slightly higher pitch will mean something entirely altered. In the episode "Itchy Martha", Martha teaches T.D.'s father to speak a word in dog, coaching him to say it exactly right. Almost all animals are able to understand some sort of human language, but are not able to speak it. In a newer episode, it is stated that Martha understands a wide range of animal languages, possibly because they have the same grammar system. She has had three superhero alter-egos.
The chimpanzee (/tʃɪmpænˈzi/; Pan troglodytes), also simply known as the chimp, is a species of great ape native to the forests and savannahs of tropical Africa. It has four confirmed subspecies and a fifth proposed one. When its close relative the bonobo was more commonly known as the pygmy chimpanzee, this species was often called the common chimpanzee or the robust chimpanzee. The chimpanzee and the bonobo are the only species in the genus Pan. Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing shows that Pan is a sister taxon to the human lineage and is thus humans' closest living relative.
The chimpanzee is covered in coarse black hair but has a bare face, fingers, toes, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. It is larger and more robust than the bonobo, weighing 40–70 kg (88–154 lb) for males and 27–50 kg (60–110 lb) for females and standing 150 cm (4 ft 11 in).
The chimpanzee lives in groups that range in size from 15 to 150 members, although individuals travel and forage in much smaller groups during the day. The species lives in a strict male-dominated hierarchy, where disputes are generally settled without the need for violence. Nearly all chimpanzee populations have been recorded using tools, modifying sticks, rocks, grass and leaves and using them for hunting and acquiring honey, termites, ants, nuts and water. The species has also been found creating sharpened sticks to spear small mammals. Its gestation period is eight months. The infant is weaned at about three years old but usually maintains a close relationship with its mother for several years more.
The chimpanzee is listed on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species. Between 170,000 and 300,000 individuals are estimated across its range. The biggest threats to the chimpanzee are habitat loss, poaching, and disease. Chimpanzees appear in Western popular culture as stereotyped clown-figures and have featured in entertainments such as chimpanzees' tea parties, circus acts and stage shows. Although chimpanzees have been kept as pets, their strength, aggressiveness, and unpredictability makes them dangerous in this role. Some hundreds have been kept in laboratories for research, especially in the United States. Many attempts have been made to teach languages such as American Sign Language to chimpanzees, with limited success.' |
