From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

I just thought I would type up this for fun, in the wake of us having to remove TFA images.

When you hear the word "Disney," what do you think? I would guess that one of two things comes to mind:

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Princesses

If you are going through the toy aisles to buy your LEGO, what are you going to see (or, assume is there, but camouflaged in the pink aisles)? Probably Disney Princesses.

Disney has got a huge hold on the "girls" market because Princesses is such a juggernaut. And those movies are, for the most part, the only ones you see promoted with merchandise after they have been in theaters for a few months (and decades, especially). The exception would be Pixar stuff, particularly Cars, but that's not quite as large as a property. Still pretty big, but not quite what they are looking for, it would seem.

So, when you have one market (girls) all but cornered, what do you do? If you are Disney, you go for the boys.

And if you are Disney, you are rich. So you buy Marvel. And then Star Wars. Superheroes and Star Wars, two things which are huge with boys.

Disney is notoriously protective of their Princess property. Expect them to be just as finicky as they try to get a foothold in the boy market. From what I have gleaned (mostly from the accuracy of Star Wars products compared to other themes) Lucasfilm was pretty particular about how their IPs were depicted, but I suspect (just suspect, I admit it's really just a hunch) that Disney is going to have a pretty iron-gloved fist puppeteering those Pinocchio strings and making Gungan egg omelets more ruthlessly than we can ever imagine.

I mean, I could see LEGO asking us to remove images because of Lucasfilm, but something about Disney just seems scarier to me. Like, I don't want to get flattened in their plans for toy market domination.

(I think I failed to establish a legitimate point with this blog, but...oh, hey, a publish button. Yay internet.)

Disney's grasp on the universe is bigger than Jabba the Hutt's! Just wait, in 2030 it'll be WWIII: Disney vs. Google

What? I'll get it from the logs.

"While we're talking Disney Princess stuff without legitimate points- I saw a singing Elsa doll the other day, all she sung was "that perfect girl is gone". To me, having kids listening over and over to that line alone just sends a bad message, like...."

Well, I can get that much anyway.

I'd say that, possibly, the entire Princess franchise sends a bad message (except for Merida, and arguably Elsa and Anna, though I see your point here). I don't want this to sound like some feminist spiel, but...I don't know. I like fairytales, but the whole "Marrying Prince Charming with a shiny magic carpet because he kisses good," is kind of outdated, yet so pertinent in our culture, largely thanks to Disney. Just look at the DP sets. They cut out anything that redeems characters like Ariel and Rapunzel, and instead just focus on the romance. I think it'll be interesting to see, if they are successful with Star Wars and Marvel (though I kind of hope that they aren't because the whole thing kind of sickens me), what kind of shape the culture will take. I'm having a hard time picturing it, because I have this mental block that it has to be as damaging as Disney Princesses arguably is, but I'm having a hard time picturing how that could turn out....

Cinderella(Walt Disney's role model) didn't want a prince she merely wanted a day off her hard life she didn't even know he was a prince until they married.

Ellionwy saved her prince, he never saved her.

Belle has to learn to love the beast, she fixes him.

Pocahontas said screw you to her Prince Charming :P She also saved him

Mulan got the guy normaly there was no kissing or anything

Kida sacrificed herself so her culture could survive

Tiana's prince lives on her hard work

Rapunzel learns to live with Eugenes flawes and made a bunch of thugs her sidekicks :P

Merida's story was about love for your mother, they both learned a lesson

It's really only Snow White, Aurora, Ariel and Anna who do nothing and get the guy. Elsa doesn't really do anything of importance either
