CLOSE THIS WINDOW NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S IN YOUR ADVENT CALENDAR

Anyway. So, my Internet's being dumb again (that, and I'm sick of database errors) so doing the rest of Nexo Knights is out for now, so it's time for another stupid blog!

Take a look at this year's City Advent Calendar (60133):

Kids out playing ice hockey, some Firemen playing in a Christmas concert while others bake cookies, nice Christmas trees and decorations everywhere. Not to mention Santa in his sleigh. What great models to build up every day until you have one big Christmas scene at the end.

Similarly for Friends:

I'm sure Soup will probably complain about the lack of minidolls, which is fair enough I guess. But everything still feels really Christmas-like and it ends up being a warm cosy scene with two friends hanging out in a nicely decorated home.

Then there's Star Wars.

Picture this:

  • "It's the first day of your advent calendar little Johnny! What did you get for your first Christmas advent calendar toy?"
  • "A mini model of a ship used by bounty hunters to transport their dead or alive prisoners!"

  • "So, it's the 5th of December today, what did you get?"
  • "A DF.9 Turret! Rebels use this to blow apart Imperials!"

  • "What did you get today?"
  • "A Star Destroy-"
  • "Ok I give up."

I want to make it very clear that do I like these mini models. I've bought a Star Wars advent calendar every year since they've come out and I'm often amazed by how the designers can produce great likenesses of vehicles and objects in the Star Wars universe by using such a tiny amount of pieces. I like having a good amount of minifigures that I can fit in with the rest of my Star Wars collection. My problem is this- unlike the other two, Star Wars Advent Calendars never feel Christmas-y.

Take this year- only 3 of the 24 builds are even remotely related to Christmas: Snow Chewbacca, a sled, and a great example of what I feel we need more of- a really cool Star Wars-y snowman with a snowball stud shooter.

Why can't we have the advent calendar reflecting more peaceful moments and people in the Star Wars universe since they don't seem to want to have these moments in sets? For example, Dexter Jettster one day, with a nice Christmas-coloured barstool or a mini counter on the next? Boss Nass with the Globe of Peace, and Padmé in celebration clothing? Beru Lars with some Tatooine-styled shelves that have been decorated? An Ewok with a small fireplace (yes, they had an Ewok in a past calendar, but it came with a catapult). Bail or Breha Organa with a Leia babyfig sitting by a decorated Alderaanian tree? Malakili with a Womp Rat wrapped up in a present? Elan Sleazebaggano with... ok... bad example. I'm not saying you'd have to throw in exclusive characters to make this calendar work feel more festive. But if we're going to have mainly troopers, couldn't they at least be smiling? Even as an alternate expressions?

As awesome as I think these Star Wars mini-models are, I feel that there would be a better place for them than an advent calendar. And while I enjoy the calendar as it is, to be honest I'm jealous of people who have the other two as they'd be getting that nice Christmas vibe from opening up their calendars every day. If I wasn't so into Star Wars, I'd definitely buy that City Calendar because it just looks so fun and festive.

This may sound like I'm whining, and I guess I am to a degree. But I'm still extremely thankful that these even exist. They're a million times better than most advent calendars which just have chocolate in them. Basically, I just wish when they were designing a Star Wars advent calendar that LEGO would do a slightly better job of keeping in mind that it's to celebrate Christmas.

So what do you think? Am I crazy and/or do you think the Star Wars calendars give off a different feeling to the other two? What do you think of the advent calendars in general?
