The only hot topic I can think of is the ongoing complaint of sets being overpriced. Oh, and CCBS is still an issue in the BIONICLE community. I don't know of many trends because I haven't really seen any MOCs lately, but I assume that the trends would vary from site to site.

Do you mean LEGO trends and hot topics, or just trends and hot topics in general (ie not LEGO related)?

My assumption is the latter, since that information would help to better resonate with an audience. AFOLs are pretty vocal about what they don't like about LEGO and their products (see my post :P ), so a quick trip through Brickset, Eurobricks, or wherever would be easy enough and there would be little need to outsource research to the community itself.

Most people add extra characters to the Disney Princess theme, wether it's characters like another princess e.g. Snow White/Tiana, a prince like Aladdin/Kristoff, a villain like Ursula/Maleficent, a supporting character like Triton or another animal many added their own Sebastian until he debuted in 2015. AFOLs tend to steer away from the pastel colours when making MOCs (despite the majority of AFOLS welcoming Friends pastel MOCS). I don't know if this would hurt the theme's sales but maybe a DTC set that would be aimed at adults could use a colour scheme more similar to the colour scheme from the movie.

People also tend to put civilians in there Super Heroes mocs/videos/whatever, despite none beside the banana man or Lois/J.J.J./Mary Jane(if they count) appear in the theme.

People tend to build zoos, can we get a sub theme? Okay maybe I'm desperate for a zoo but a lot of people do build them :P
