20202 Robot Designer is a LEGO Master Builder Academy set released in 2011. The special minifigure accessories included are a large gun and a helmet.

Content[edit | edit source]

The kit comes with 155 LEGO pieces. The set includes pieces to create the Level One Master Builder Academy Minifigure's helmet, and "plasma pulse blaster". The kit comes with a Designer Handbook.

Models[edit | edit source]

There are 3 models in the instruction booklet; the X-91-B, the Robo Walker and the Plasma Mech. These models are used to display how to add details, balance, and alternative uses.

X-91-B[edit | edit source]

This is the main model of the kit. It has a mechanical brain, weapons and smooth armor plates. This has 15 flexible movements altogether.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. The powerful X-91-B has no need of a pilot! With a protective dome over its computerized brain and sensors, a rocket-powered jetpack and multiple types of blasters at the end of its poseable arms, this mighty robot is a fully autonomous and ready to take on any challenge.

The LEGO® Master Builder techniques of details and finding alternative uses for LEGO pieces will outfit your robot for its missions, while the balance technique lets the X-91-B stand upright on its own two feet!

Robo-Walker[edit | edit source]

The Robo Walker is a mechanical model with an organic and insect like appearance. It has 4 legs, and a large artillery blaster on the top for offense. In the front it has a transparent sky blue screen to protect the pilot that controls the machine. All together it has 10 poseable movements.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Who says robots have to look and move like people? With its four poseable legs, the insect-like Robo-Walker is built to scramble over uneven terrain without losing its footing. And when danger threatens, its giant rotating laser cannon is there to even the odds.

As a mecha model, the Robo-Walker has a built-in seat and cockpit for a minifigure pilot. You'll find plenty of details and alternative uses of pieces here, but where it especially shines is in the LEGO Master Builder technique of balance!

Plasma Mech[edit | edit source]

The Plasma Mech is the third and final model of the kit. It is a military-like unit that has many weapons and gadgets in handy. It is a model that would be used mostly for getting certain difficult tasks accomplished.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. The rough, tough Plasma Mech is custom-built for heavy-duty missions! Wether mining for underground magma crystals or stomping across alien worlds, it's got the heavy armor and plasma blasters it needs to always get the job done.

The LEGO® Master Builder technique of finding alternative uses will give you glider wings, and balance provides the power to pose, but it's the details - like foot-mounted jump jets, flashlight hands and air tanks for the pilot - that makes all the difference with this mech!

Handbook Content[edit | edit source]

The book’s foreword is written by Marc Stafford, a Master Builder. The following pages introduce Robot Designer and the techniques used in the kit. Following that is the building instructions for the three kit models and minifigure accessories. After that comes the kit's Design Challenge and Questions about Robot Design. The Book's Design Lab focuses on symmetrical building, followed by highlights on the mecha creations of Peter Reid (including the Exo Suit.)

Author's Note[edit | edit source]

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Dear LEGO® Master Builder Academy Member,

Welcome to the third LEGO® Master Builder Academy Designer Handbook!

Even though I'm a Professional LEGO Designer, I still learn new LEGO Building techniques every day just like you do. I think this continual improvement of our building skills is important for LEGO creators. The more we build and the more we look at the techniques of others and try to figure out new cool ways of using those techniques, the better our creations become.

There are still designers here at the LEGO Designer Studio who made the LEGO sets I played with as a kid. Some probably even built the toys that your parents played with! I've even had the privilege to meet the Designer who invented the LEGO minifigure. That amazing ability to make an idea reality is where you and LEGO MBA come in. We're here to put the techniques and tools you need into your head and hands so you can figure out how to build any shape or function you can think of.

This Designer Handbook spotlights robot and mecha models, a subject close to my heart. Not only do I build them for fun in my own time, but I've designer LEGO sets with robots for a number of LEGO themes, including EXOFORCE®, Mars Mission, Power Miners, Space Police, Atlantis and Ninjago. To me, they are one of the coolest LEGO creations it's possible to build. Hopefully by the time you finish this Designer Handbook, you'll be ready to join me in proving how versatile robots can be. I'm really looking forwar to seeing your future creations both online and at LEGO events!

All the best and good building,

Mark Stafford, LEGO Designer
