79011 Dol Guldur Ambush is a The Hobbit set released in 2013 as a part of The Desolation of Smaug theme. It contains 217 pieces, in order build two models and three minifigures. It can be combined with Dol Goldur Battle to create a larger model of Dol Guldur.

Description[edit | edit source]

The set consists of two models, those of a large section of rockwork and a small double catapult. The rockwork is meant to represent a part of Dol Guldur in scenes from the movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. The piece consists mainly of dark grey parts, used to create a section of ruined wall with a large opening in the middle. On one side is featured an old, half-dead tree. On the other side is featured a flip-open wall, outof which can be fired a brown flick-fire missile. Between these is featured a large, arched opening, large enough to admit a minifigure. Around the arch are featured four dark tan spikes, meant to represent rusted iron spikes from the movie. Behind the rock wall are two turning mechanisms, which each sent their respective attacks directly into the doorway, in order to ambush anyone attempting to travel through. These include a double set of axes, set at stomach height and head height for a minifigure, and a large double-ended swinging hammer, in order to smash a body off of the axes. These turn via a small lever placed on top of them.

The other model, that of a catapult, is fairly straightforward. It contains a pair of wheels, with which to push the cart around. A handle is featured in the rear to provide the pushing power. In the front, a pair of mini-catapults are featured, and which can catapult small 1x1 cylinders through the air a short distance.

Three minifigures are also included; those of Beorn and two Gundabad Orcs. Beorn wears dark brown pants, a dark brown shirt, and a sand yellow molded headpiece. Beorn's pants contain a multitude of printing, suggesting fur-covered legs, such as are his clothes. A belt with two strings hanging down his right leg is also featured. Beorn's shirt, as well, contains lots of printing detailing more fur clothes, as well as a bared chest and strings crisscrossing over his stomach. Beorn's arms and hands are nougat, and are nonprinted. His head consists of a single, special-mold head. It contains lines detailing his excessive amounts of facial hair, including a split beard, bushy eyebrows and a large mane of hair on top of his head. The headpiece features a flat, but curved, area upon which part of a face is printed. A open mouth, glaring eyes, and eyebrows are prevalent here.

The two Gundabad Orcs are similar to their cousins in 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army, as they have brown pants, a dark brown shirt, and a medium nougat head. These variants, however, contain hairpieces. The Orcs' legs contain printing suggesting a loincloth as their only true "pants". These cloths feature printing suggesting a multitude of teeth sticking out in several directions. Their shirts, as well, contain printing, suggesting such Orkish elements such as teeth, mismatched strips of cloth as clothes, various bones, a shoulder belt, and partially based chest. The Orcs' heads are identical, and feature printing suggesting open, toothy mouths, numerous lines of warpaint, yellow, deeply sunken eyes, and jawlines. On the back, the heads feature a small amount of printing suggesting scraggly hair. However, this is normally covered by the Orcs' black hairpieces. This hair is coloured jet black, and features molded Orken ears jutting off to the sides. The hair is similar to Elven hair, except it is shorter, raggedier, and the ears are longer and more pointed. One of the Orcs also features a neckpiece, which is molded to represent four teeth coming off the shoulders.

Background[edit | edit source]

Dol Guldur was an ancient fortress first built by the Silvan Elves as their headquarters. However, it was eventually abandoned, and later taken over by the Necromancer, after his defeat in the Battle of the Last Alliance (where the Ring was sliced off of Sauron's finger, and he was subsequently destroyed). At one time, he was driven out by Gandalf.

Radagast later discovered that the Necromancer has taken up residence in Dol Guldur for a second time. He alerted Gandalf, who in turn told the White Council. After much deliberating, they decided not to attack, dismissing Gandalf's fears. Gandalf summoned Radagast, and they travel to Dol Guldur in an attempt to drive out the Necromancer. However, the Orc armies, along with Azog as their chief, gathered at Dol Guldur. Galdalf was defeated and taken captive by the Necromancer.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Contrary to his appearance, Beorn's head is, in fact, a single piece. No normal circular headpiece is included.
