Hobgoblin is a MARVEL comics character.

Background

Business man Roderick Kingsley's henchman had almost got caught by Spider-Man but escaped. While wandering, he stumbled upon one of the now apparently deceased Green Goblin's (That guy never dies) old hideouts, brimming with gear and costumes that were just waiting to be used. The henchman contacted Kingsley, who killed the man and took the hideout for himself. He then created a new costume, wanting to separate himself from the insane, older Green Goblin, since he kept telling himself he wasn't insane. He became the super-villain, the Hobgoblin. His initial battle with Spider-Man left him in much pain and exhausted, but he escaped. Deciding that he needed Osborn's super strength formula, he got it and modified it so that the insanity inducing side effects might be avoided. The formula worked and Kingsley was able to match Spider-Man in physical, hand-to-hand combat. He then had small time crook under his employment, Lefty Donovan, dress up as the Hobgoblin and use the formula to battle Spider-Man. This proved his undoing when, on screen, Roderick watched Spider-Man defeat and begin to interrogate Donovan, Roderick used a remote control to fly Donovan's glider into the side of a building, killing Donovan. Hobgoblin then battled Spider-Man and Black Cat to test his super strength formula for himself, getting away again. The next time he battled Spider-Man, he had assembled al of New York's top business men and was about to offer all of them a business proposition, but Spider-Man arrived and engaged Hobgoblin in an altercation in which Kingsley, as the Hobgoblin, had apparently also duplicated a gas that Norman Osborn had used in an earlier battle with Spider-Man as the Green Goblin. The gas apparently takes away Spider-Man's spider-sense, though only temporarily. Spider-Man went unconscious and tried to throw a tracer on Hobgoblin's glider but failed. Kingpin, who was at the meeting, woke Spidey up with smelling salts and then revealed that Kingpin himself had, in fact, placed Spidey's tracer on the Goblin's glider. Spidey normally uses his spider-sense to follow the tracer but since Hobgoblin took it away from him with the gas, he digs up an old electronic tracer he had built and then had in his closet for the longest time. The tracer's signal takes him to Hobgoblin's hideout where, when Spidey arrives, a fight ensues around all the flammable equipment. Hobgoblin ties at Spider-Man with a laser gun only for Spider-Man to dodge, and the laser destroys Norman Osborn's old journals that Hobgoblin was getting all his secrets from. Apparently, since Osborn knew Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man, he had written it down in his journals, but Hobgoblin hadn't been able to read that part yet for the journals were destroyed. In anger, Hobgoblin fires at Spidey again, this time, since Spidey dogged, again, it hits flammable machinery causing the whole hideout to explode. Hobgoblin is the first to recover from the blast and beats an unconscious Spider-man on the head with a piece of debris on the head before escaping in his armored battle van. Spider wakes up and pursues the van, tearing open the top and getting inside. Inside the van, yet another fight begins, but, this time, Spidey's spider-sense returns and he his able to knock Hobgoblin upside the head a dew good times before the van careens into the Hudson River since no one is driving it. Hobgoblin insists upon fighting Spider-Man instead of saving himself since Spidey is trying to get out while the van sinks. Spidey successfully escapes and the van explodes under the water. When Spidey swims back down to see if the Goblin survived, all he finds is a shredded mask.
