Lego Fun to Build is a video game released for the Sega Pico in December 1995, exclusively in Japan. It was the first LEGO video game ever released.

Background[edit | edit source]

Following the rise of video gaming in the 1980s and 90s, The Lego Group became concerned that video games would overtake the traditional toy market and tasked a subset of employees from the company to explore the market and how LEGO products could work in a video game.[1]

The Sega Pico was an educational console released by Sega in 1993. Its main gimmick was that games came as picture books that attached to the console, which was shaped like a laptop. Each game used touch features, and the system included a stylus so players could interact with the games.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Lego Fun to Build is divided into four different hub worlds, each containing several building puzzles and minigames. The levels are themed around the Town, Aquazone, Castle, and Space themes.

The Town level features racing and pizza delivery minigames. The Aquazone level includes a side-scrolling platformer and a claw machine-style game. The Castle level has a minigame where players pick paths to reach a castle and rescue trapped knights. The Space level includes an ice hockey game and another claw machine-style minigame.

The game also includes a free build mode, allowing players to build whatever they want with provided pieces or customize models already in the game

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Due to its Japan-only release, Lego Fun to Build is fairly unknown, with most people believing Lego Island was the first LEGO game instead.
