Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril is the handheld version of Lego Marvel Super Heroes, released for the Nintendo DS, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, iOS and Android.

Background[edit | edit source]

Lego games have consistently received versions for handheld systems since their inception, with some titles released on the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, but these versions were usually quite different from their home console and PC counterparts. With the release of the Nintendo DS in 2004 and the PlayStation Portable in 2005, handheld releases became split between multiple versions. PSP versions were often much closer to the console releases, sometimes nearly full ports, while DS versions were similar but different. Additionally, several of these games also received versions for J2ME-compatible mobile devices. These were developed separately and were completely different from any other versions.

Starting with LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues, TT Games shifted their approach, deciding to develop one game for both PSP and DS instead of separate versions for each system. This trend continued into the next generation with the 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Mobile versions of the games for iOS and Android were also introduced around this time, starting with LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4.

Development[edit | edit source]

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril was intended to mark a new direction for handheld LEGO games. Unlike previous handheld titles, the game was developed with the mobile version in mind first and then later ported to handheld consoles rather than the other way around.

This decision was reportedly unpopular among the development team, with some staff even leaving the project over it. Following the game’s poor reception and feedback, the mobile-focused approach was quickly dropped, and future handheld releases were designed to resemble their console counterparts much more closely.[1]

Plot[edit | edit source]

The game has the same plot as the console counterpart, using compressed cutscenes from the console release.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Because the game was designed around mobile devices, several key elements from Lego Marvel Super Heroes were changed or left out. Each level from the console version was divided into three mini levels, designed for quick, bite-sized gameplay. Additionally, the game does not include the open-world city.

Each level contains ten gold bricks which are obtained by completing a challenge or task, such as completing the level in a certain amount of time or completing the level without taking any damage.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril is the only handheld Lego game to include a subtitle differentiating it from its console counterpart.
  • Similar to other handheld Lego games, several characters are included that aren't in the console version.
