User blog:ToaMeiko/MediaWiki 1.24 update

From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

Greetings!

As many of you likely have noticed today, many things look different or act different (or are completely broken). This is because today we've updated MediaWiki, the software Brickimedia wikis run on, to the new version 1.24. Many changes in the MediaWiki software took place, and as a result we also updated all the extensions used on Brickimedia. This has caused a lot of changes since the last time extensions were updated, and also has broken/undid many of the manual changes we've made.

We are working with the extension developers to move what changes we used to have to be included in the upstream version of each extension (the public version of the extension used by everyone rather than just our modified version).

We are well aware of many issues users are experiencing. To outline some of them:

  • You now see many more social features-- these are all features part of SocialProfile that we previously disabled. We won't be disabling them right now, but are working with the extension developer to implement a non-hack-involving method to disable individual features we don't want (e.g. adding users as "foes")
  • The SocialProfile change also breaks some things we previously had such as global avatars. Please don't bother uploading new avatars at this moment as it will not work. We will have this resolved as soon as possible.
    • Global avatars have been restored. --ToaMeiko (talk) 20:38, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
  • With the SocialProfile change, your user pages may look a bit different. If you use Special:ToggleUserPage you can change how it displays if you want the "new" layout or if you want the old one you're used to having. This should restore any "lost" user page content.
  • Some skins might not work. We're working on updating each skin to support the new version of MediaWiki. DeepSea and Refreshed should both be fine as of the time this post is submitted.
    • All seem to work. (Lewis Cawte, 00:37, 22 December 2014 (UTC))
  • Some site features may be a little "buggy". If you notice anything that isn't acting normal, let me know in the comments.
    • MultimediaViewer is not workingworking but may be cached into the next universe. We've had multiple people verify that it works now, as to how you clear your cache to get it working is a different question (Lewis Cawte, 00:37, 22 December 2014 (UTC))
  • Several users have reported issues with logging in to the site lately. This appears to be unrelated to the update but is being investigated as we speak.

As stated above, please comment any issues you find whether it be on this wiki or anywhere on Brickimedia. If you have any questions, ask them below or message me or Lcawte.

Thanks!

If you had an email associated with your account, you can use Special:PasswordReset. If not, you'll have to create a new account until we work out the bug that's causing people to be locked out of their accounts. Sorry. :/

I can also merge your old accounts into a new account you create so you won't have to worry about having more than one account if that helps you.

That's the same issue several other users have and are experiencing. :/ If you can try Seahorseruler's method to fix this as seen at github:306, that might work.

Global avatars have been resolved and should start appearing to be fixed in the next 24 hours.

That new multiupload's working great, much better than the old version :)

Feel free to thank Lee Worden, the developer who essentially rewrote the extension earlier this year. I'm sure he'd love to hear some positive feedback from happy MultiUpload users! :)

When will I be able to get my Robb Stark avatar back? And what happened to my user page?

There is no definitive ETA, but soon.
The actual code patch for making avatars global had been written and deployed on Brickimedia for a long time, but it was lost during the most recent upgrade (this was an intentional decision on our part; maintaining local code patches which are not integrated into upstream is, in the long run, a pain, and also a burden on our sysadmins/developers).
The tricky part is that we'll need to refactor the existing patch a bit (for forwards compatibility), integrate it with upstream, update Brickimedia's code and update Brickimedia's configuration.

As for your user page, please read this very blog post again carefully. ToaMeiko wrote about this particular matter: "With the SocialProfile change, your user pages may look a bit different. If you use Special:ToggleUserPage you can change how it displays if you want the "new" layout or if you want the old one you're used to having. This should restore any "lost" user page content."

Just wondering are we going to get our comments back to how they were? (sorted descending instead of ascending)? I know that was a custom thing NXT made and not a regular part of the comments extension.

Ideally yes! Since we've moved to using upstream versions of the extensions to make updating possible in the future, we lost all our downstream hacks (because with them we can't update the extension automatically). (which is something Wikia can't do because they have thousands more hacks than us :D) We'll look into implementing the descending comments into mw:Extension:Comments. Shouldn't be hard to do seeing as it wasn't a difficult hack for UltrasonicNXT to put in our version of the extension.

Just tried and it says the files already exist- the files must have uploaded but just gone to the error page and not shown up in the RC :S

Anyway, just tested with a different file, all seems to be working fine. thanks :)

That extension is horrible, nobody has maintained it for a long time and ShoutWiki has to do emergency maintenance on it every release when we upgrade.
