5707 LEGO Friends is a Video Game released in 1999 for Windows PC. It was targeted toward girls. It follows five girls and their band, Tuff Stuff.
Development[edit | edit source]
LEGO Friends was the result of a research study conducted in the mid-1990s by Elena Catón.[1] Throughout its history, the LEGO Group has made several attempts to appeal to its female demographic, which has traditionally been smaller than its male audience. On multiple occasions, LEGO introduced themes specifically aimed at girls, such as Scala in 1979 and Belville in 1994.
At the time, research indicated that young girls tended to lose interest in LEGO products around the age of eight, a trend not seen among boys. As a result, Elena Catón was brought in to research which hobbies and activities LEGO could incorporate into products that would better appeal to girls. Around this period, LEGO revived the Scala theme in 1997 and expressed interest in developing a video game based on it. Both ideas were combined into a female-oriented game featuring a collection of mini-games and activities. However, because too many activities were designed to be included, the developers narrowed the focus to music-based games to fit the storyline about a group of girls forming a band.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- Some of the cut minigames include a magazine editor, a makover game and a dog training activity.[1]
- Lego Friends is notable for being one of only two Lego games to not include any Lego elements.
- Drome Racers is the other one; however, unlike Lego Friends, it does not include the Lego name in its title.
