The 8879 Power Functions IR Speed Remote Control was introduced in 2009 alongside the 10194 Emerald Night in the Trains theme.

The remote control featured two dials. One dial controlled the speed in forward and reverse. The second dial featured a horn/whistle, and a stop feature

The remote control was recalled in July 2009 due to, the batteries in the remote can overheat and cause hazards. LEGO had received four calls of batteries over heating, but no injuries. Lego has now repaired this problem.
